How many miles will the powertrain last?

2004 5.4L 4x4. With the proper oil changes and other fluid changes and occasional off road use how many miles is this powertrain good for? 100k, 150k, 200k??

thanks,

Jansen

Well, that is a near impossible question to answer depending on several known and unknown things but I think you could get 150K easy.

it really depends.

it could, in theory, last forever if you continued to repair it.

for what it's worth, when Ford developed the 4.6 and 5.4 they bench tested them to 1,000,000 miles.

They also had test mules that they beat the ***** out of for many thousands of miles.

My 1/2 Chevy V6 went 430,000 when I sold it (no drivetrain repairs in that time)

My 98 F150 V6 had 220,000 when I sold it. (no drivetrain repairs in that time)

So with this track record, I expect at least 200,000 to 300,000 out of my '04 5.4 with no significant repairs. I would then extend that to 400,000 or 500,000 if I want to spend the money on significant repairs (ie tranny rebuild, new gaskets & seals, etc)

J-150 ....I have to agree with you...

I know many that change oil every 5000k and take care of the rig in general and have 500,000k with no major repairs other than wear parts like brakes, tires, muffer, batterys, top of rear wheel well fender rust...Ford has never fixed that problem yet it seems....

im guessing it will last over 500,000 miles. the engines are built much better than they used to be. the machines that put them together so tightly that it is much harder to get leaks and other problems. if you take care of it, it will last at least until you get rid of it. i doubt 90% of people would keep the same vehicle over 500,000 miles.

I'm gonna be upset if I don't see at least 250K out of mine.

That makes me feel better. I don't drive vehicles hard and keep the oil changed on the dot because it is life and death. One thing that I do look forward to (this is the first new vehicle I have ever owned, all others were 115,000+ at time of purchase) is changing the fluids, all that apply, at the correct time to try and get that life out of it. For $30,000+ and the maintenance I will do, I hope to have it last a long time.

I will never know how many miles the powertrain will get - mainly for 2 reasons.

1. After 10+ years I get bored with the same vehicle, especially since the new body styles come out and the electronics are continually being upgraded.

2. The safety features are continually being updated (side air bags, anti-lock brakes, etc).

I got rid of my '86 F150 in 2000. I'm sure somebody is still driving that truck around.
