DIY reverse sensing

Hello all,

I didnt get the reverse sensing option on my truck, but would like to get an aftermarket product for it. Has anyone ever tried this? How easy was it to do?

I was thinking of buying this one. http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/wipaas4sebar.html

It seems like a good deal. has anyone ever used this wirelss sensor? how good was the product? Im a little nervous about drilling into the bumper because i have never done it before, any tips would be appreciated!

Unhappy Backup sensor system

I paid around $350 to have a aftermarket system installed on my '04 Supercrew. It was the Marksman Backup Monitoring System. Model: MBS250. The sensors (2) were mounted on the bottom of the bumper. After 3 attempts are getting the system to work properly I had it removed and got my money back. This system may work well for others - it just didn't work for me.

The installer broke a drill bit when drilling the holes in my rear bumper and left a small scratch on my bumper so if you have to drill beware of that.

I like the concept of the backup sensors but my experience was not a good one.

One thing I did determine - I would probably not use the visual indication because when you are backing up your eyes are looking at where you are backing - not on some visual indication up front (some folks may really like it though).

My problem with my system was sometimes it beeped when nothing was back there, sometimes it beeped when it was suppose to, and other times it would NOT beep when it should. I didn't trust the system so that's why I had it removed.

I plan on getting another system. Hopefully some folks will post what system they have gotten and if it works for them.

Does the aftermarket system mute the stereo like the factory one does. I thought that was pretty cool!

Have you installed this? and of so are you happy with it? I really wanted the sensors when I ordered the truck, but I didn't feel like getting the $1200 towing option that is required to get it!!!

I don’t have the Auto Park 2000 Backup Safety System. After reading this thread about concerns drilling the bumper, I posted the page. My next-door neighbor has one on his Chevy S-10 and he seems to be very satisfied with the performance.

I haven't towed anything yet, but I will someday. It just seems natural to have the tow package on a truck.

"$1200 towing option" ... where are YOU buying it from!? Isn't this option closer to $300 invoice!? The RSS is then just over $200 invoice. For factory components, under warranty, and part of the VIN (for blue book selling purposes), I thought getting the RSS on my vehicle was well worth it. Plus, it works great!

Sorry, I don't really have any personal experience to add as far as aftermarket products are concerned. It's just that sometimes it's better to get some options from the dealer/factory rather than aftermarket. Past that, here are some links that may be of interest:

EchoMaster (sold by PepBoys?)
bunch of interesting product links
ConsumerReports article

Good luck!

I installed the ParkingE (Parking easy) system.

Quick install, and I really like the digital readout for feet/inches.

It's available from Stratus Group

Here are some pix of the install on my truck

I have the Alpine IVA-D300 7" LCD Screen. I am taking advantage of the backup camera feature on it. I installed a Crime Stopper plate cam and add connected to the reverse sensing wire.

Tis a very cool setup.

I ordered this 8 sensor system from Sports Imports Limited. It is GARBAGE. And I contacted the vendor, no response. There is no manufacturer information in the kit either. Stay away from them.

Is it possible to add the stock system? Is the truck wiring harness in place? I purchased 04 Lariat and I have a hitch but not the backup stuff. I would really like to go with OEM setup if possible.

I just leave the drawbar in my receiver hitch. Back up until you hear plastic breaking.

Some do, some don't. I think the mute was deleted late in the '04 model year or in the '05s all together.
