that space under the pop-out cupholder under the radio...

What is that for? In case I'm not being clear- Mine is an '04 SCab (5.4, XLT, 4x2).
Under the radio, there are controls for the A/C/heat, then the drink/ashtray that pops out. Under that- there is a space fabricated into the dash/ console area- almost looks like a semi- oval cd holder space.
I've tried- I can't get my mobile phone to stay in there when it's charging. CD's fall out- it's not angled right for them to stay in.
What is the intended use for this thing? Can it be removed, so that I could maybe mount a CB or HAM radio there? How would one go about CAREFULLY removing it? Is it held in by screws? Brackets? Plastic retainers?
Thanks a million... BTW- I just got my Westin Nerf bars installed yesterday. Love it, but the truck now looks "unbalanced"- like it needs something else... maybe bed rails. New wheels/tires are on the list, as is a spray-in liner.
Anyway- thanks for the help... I'm kinda stumped on this thing.

It holds my RedMan pretty damn well. If you ask me, I think that little space and the cigarette lighter area were wasted. I think they could have been used for something else.

But you're right, not much stays in there.

i thankfully don't have that issue 'cuz i have the manual transfer
box so my cup holders are on the floor, BUT i do have that poor
excuse for a coin holder do hickie .... ( it doesn't hold my coins )
can't stand needless rattles. I keep my coins in the ash tray since i'm a non smoker ..

My c-phone fits very nicely in the space and out of sight for those tempted to make 'unauthorized intrusions'.

well, I wish I had a digital camera, I'd snap a photo.
Truth be told, I can't see that it has a use. The Red Man thing is the best use of it I've heard- I reckon Beech Nut would fit too...

No matter how softly I accelerate, whatever I put in that space comes rolling or sliding out of it.

If FORD angled that space downward, it'd hold CD's or a GPS unit alright... of course- it's flat.

The only other idea I have is to stick some velcro in the bottom of that space, put some on whatever I want to keep in that space, and just stick it to it. It'd keep the stuff from sliding out onto the floor.
That's what I've come up with so far... slow day at work.

EDITED TO ADD: Glock 36 slides out of there. I tried that- as does the S&W 642. RINO 120(GPS) stayed put, until I hit a strong bump on I-40.
Also- I agree- that change thing is the only thing I don't like about my truck... it's right in front of my eyes, constantly reminding me that I am broke. It's also ugly as sin. It would have been better had they not put the slots in it... The ashtray works MUCH better.

This

My useless dash spot is just above the ashtray. Is this the same as others? Do some have have a shelf in there in stead? I'd rather have that, who needs a cigarette lighter/power point, when I already have one?

I'd like to put a shelf in there.

I noticed from the pic featured above that "IF" there was a reverse sense system the ON OFF button would be ther next to the cig lighter.

Still though, what a waste of space......

I am going to grab some red man chew on the way home....

The space he is talking about is the little cubby hole below the XM Commander and below the cupholders. It's pretty small. The second waste of space that I was talking about was where the cig lighter is. I took it out and installed the Commander in its place.

I use that little... eh... cubbyhole for my sunglasses.

To remove it, just get a good grip on it and pull it straight out.

There's not much room behind that thing for a CB/Ham radio.
There's a little more room for one if the ashtray/cupholder assembly is removed, but not for a very large radio, depthwise.

I've been pondering where to install a 10 meter/CB rig, but haven't decided on anything. the radio I'd like to use just doesn't fit where the ashtray is... so I'm kinda shopping for radios.

Might just save a little and get an Icom 706.

The 2 bolts under the front of the middle seat look like a good place to mount a bracket, but that would leave the radio in plain sight. Thief bait.

Regards,
Gary

I think ford put that cubby hole there to stump those guys who are trying to figure out what it is for and why nothing will stay in there. I bet those guys down at ford are haveing a laugh right right now pictureing us trying to put stuff in there and it keeps falling out. darn!
Just kidding guys. it just struck me as funny picturing you guys keeping on trying to put stuff in there and it falling out.

by the way here is a thought for the CB idea. how about getting one of the large storage bins for your over head storage concole. I think that would be a great place for a cb and convenient to. also you could just close the bin when your done and it would be hidden.

I would imagine that if I ever had a problem with my cigarette lighter, I'd catch hell.

I think it ends there though.

Again, some people have a problem with 'Tuff'. I don't mean 'tough', just 'Tuff'.

I have a 3 1/2 year old chocolate lab named Tuff. He's named after Tuff Hedeman. It's also a play on 'Built Ford Tough'.

I like it.
