3 Problems

Please look at my gallery under "Problems" and tell me if these are normal. Should the drive train (is that what's it's called) be rusted? Is the grease on the axle normal or is it a leak? I also have a problem where the truck jerks when I accellerate from coasting on the interstate and it sometimes jerks when it starts to coast on cruise. Any input on these probs would be nice.

1. It's new...bare metal will have a nice red rusty color until it ages and turns a nice dark brown It's normal/nothing to worry about. Trust me...you won't notice it in a few months and it's not like it's going to rust through. If you had that on your body parts, then I'd be a little worried!

2. The damp area you see on the rear end is basically normal as long as it's not what the Army calls a class 2 or 3 leak (forming a drip or actually in the process of dripping as you watch it). I'll have mine in tomorrow for a couple minor issues and they'll be looking at mine too...but from all I know and hear, it's not an issue unless it's dripping or worse.

3. You're probably experiencing the truck coming out of overdrive. That's my guess anyway, from your description. I wouldn't worry about it. A way to test that theory is to turn off overdirve and then try it.

Your driveshaft is normal. The metal is designed to develop a surface coating of rust to create a barrier from the driveshaft and the elements and oxygen. You can see the same principles used on structural steel trusses and buildings, its just a surface rust used for the protection of corrosion through the part.

Two of the above posts about rusting parts really intrigued me. Several years ago when shopping for a new vehicle, I inspected some chrysler products and was astounded when I looked under several of their offerings on the showroom floors, and observed many, many rusted components...steering assembly, front suspension, drivetrain, brakes, oil reservoirs, etc. etc. At the same time, inspections of Ford/GM vehicles revealed some, but fewer, rusted parts.

Holy Moly, did I get the wrong impression of Chrysler, i.e. rust is a sign of quality.

I also noted that the Dodge 1500 truck sticker said it was assembled in Mexico, but what the hey, my wife's Olds was made in Windsor, Canada.
