Front Tire Cupping

Anyone having a problem with their front tires cupping. I have 9000 miles on it now and I have noticed the front tires tread is screwy. Looking at the tire from strait on from the side the first row of tread is lower on the left then higher on the right. If you were looking a a single **** it would look like this / but with about a 5 degree angle. Each **** is the same way all around the tire. I noticed someone had their ball joints replaced at about 9000 miles. Was this what it was doing to your tires?

Check your tire pressure first.

I agree - check your pressure - I bet it's too low. Mine were doing that and I found out my gauge was reading 5 lbs too LOW. Also make sure you check the pressure when the tires are cold - not after you've been driving. 35 lbs in the front and back. Mine are fine now. Rides better too

If you haven't rotated your tires in the 9000 miles you have driven then that is normal wear. As mentioned, rotating tires at 5000 miles is recommended. If you drive mostly in town doing a lot of turning I would do the rotation sooner, maybe around 3000 to help with more even tire wear.

I did rotate them about 4500 miles ago. I did not notice it the first time I had them rotated. (I did not do it myself) Maybe it is just my driving style. Not to many highway miles, about 1/4. I definately push the truck hard so maybe that is it.

if your pressure is okay and you have already done a tire rotation, then you need to have it checked for alignment. It may have fallen out of spec. Go get a complete alignment done and see how bad it was. Fifty bucks on an alignment can make your tires wear a lot more even, plus they will rotate for you free usually.

Are those the tires that came on the truck? I'm not sure about the quality of Hankook tires, but my BFG's on 18's are wearing great. I rotate every 6,000 miles or every other oil change you can say.

i just noticed the same thing on my 285 bfg's.

i always ran them at 50psi, but when i complained to the dealer about the harshness of ride of the truck (trying to ge the frame dampner installed) they said they lowered my tire pressure to 35 psi. im sure the 1000 miles at that pressure did not do it, but i am going back up to 50 and having a front end alignment. way too much money spent on those bfg's . but then..... i forgot to rotate for first 7000 miles so my bad prolly.

i will check alignment as it pulls to right a little now, not sure if the pulling cupped the tire..... or the cupped tires makes it pull

I just took mine in to the dealer for a steering wheel vibration and the same tire cupping problem. First they balanced my tires which helped the vibration some..Then they did a frontend alignment which fixed my vibration problem and now my tires seem to be wearing evenly again. Turns out the warrenty covers one tire rotation and balance and one frontend alignment with in 12 months of purchase..

Yes the Hankkoks were the tires that came on the truck. I have no idea what quality tire they are.

I will take in in to the dealer to have them rebalance and check alignment. I'll post the results.

Many tire related websites will say cupping is due to bad shocks, but that should not be a problem on a new truck.

My wife's mini SUV was cupping the front tires, even after I put new struts on. It turned out the alignment did not have enough toe-in.
