Shimmy again

Has anyone put on custom wheels and gotten an even worse nibble? I started with a little one and then added aftermarket 20" wheels and now its really irritating. I taking it in next week.

It often happens with a change of wheels or tires, e.g. a change of tires will often necessitate an alignment...you have altered the front end geometry from OEM when wheels/tires are changed.

I also just intalled 20" wheels with 305 width tires. I get a pretty good shimmy in the steering wheel between about 60-75 MPH and it also seems to pull to the right now. When I first got my truck, the OEM tires caused this shimmy, but a rebalance took care of it. My tire guy tried rebalancing these new tires/wheels 3 times with no success. He has ordered me some different tires and we will see if that helps.

I never had any "shimmy" in my steering wheel with the 18" stock wheels/tires or the 20" wheel/tire combo I've been running for the past 3 months- that is until the dealership rotated my tires. Now at 70mph I get a bad steering wheel shake and the truck pulls to the right. I've had the wheels re-balanced, but no help. I'm dropping the rear 2" tomorrow, so I'm going to try the re-balance and realignment after that and see where I stand.

Here's the answer to the shimmy:

It's called "Road Force Balancing"!!!

I had my 20" wheels with 305/50/20's balanced "3" times at the local shops with their basic balancing machines. First of all, if you are watching them balance your wheels, the machine never spins more than 30-40 MPH. I ask you, how the hell can you call that a "High Speed Balance"...????

Well, after 3 trips to the locals, I decided to do some research on Balancing and I came across the term "Road Force Balance", I decided to find a shop in the area who had one of these machines. I found one, and to make a very long story short.....
the shimmy is completely gone!!!!

It costs a little more, and they spend more time on the balancing, but it is obviously well worth it.

It cost me $106.00 total for the Road Force Balance. I will never waste another dime on a regular wheel balance.
