These things are for real. We are running a MegaSquirt on a daily driver with no real issues. I have had far less trouble with the MegaSquirt that I ever had tring to get "mail off to tuner for a another try" type chip. I bet now I could get one up from scratch on my Lightning in a couple of weekends.
