4x4 Low Problem

Hello all,
I've been lurking this board for a long time now and have learned a great deal. I picked up my 04 Screw in March. It's been trouble free until the recent "fail safe mode" problem. They flashed the PCM last week with an upgrade so now it's wait and see. I'm also experiencing the "shudder" problem that I guess requires a shim in the clutch pack. I haven't got that one scheduled for a fix yet.

My newest problem: I was using the 4wd lo last weekend and noticed that the light indicating 4 lo doesn't come on. It comes on when the truck starts but doesn't when I turn the switch to 4 lo. Does anyone else have this problem?

Sorry to mix topics but while I'm at it, I've got an ATC question. When you're running the A/C in automatic mode, are you able to raise the temperature so that it will turn off the A/C? I can't get it to go off. Even if I raise the temperature to 90. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

MM

First off, welcome! SE MI in the house!!

Anywho, didja follow the steps in the manual to engage 4low? Just asking, I wanna be sure.

With the ETAC, the a/c will always cycle on/off automatically as need. Most of the time it stays on to dry the air entering the cabin. If you want it off, press the a/c button.

You have to be in N and at a dead stop to go into 4Lo. And I think you might be refering to the fan not shutting off with your a/c question correct?

This is my fourth F-150 in 8 years. I didn't know that they changed the procedure for putting it in 4 lo. I've always just turned the dial and it went into 4 lo. I've tried it while in park but not in neutral. I'll have to try that. Thanks for the tip. RTFM, who'd of thought?

On the A/C situation: The A/C works fine, cold air and all. However, I can't get the A/C indicator light to go off when I raise the temp. It comes on when I hit "Auto" but doesn't go off unless I turn it off. I can also still hear the compressor switching on and off. I did check the manual on it and all it said was that when is automatic mode the A/C or Heat would turn on and off as needed. I thought that meant that the A/C would switch off when not needed. If the A/C indicator light means the A/C is on, why would it not turn off when not needed? Am I making sense? LOL

For the a/c - the light will never go out in auto mode. It might not be running, but that little light will always be lit. You will hear the compressor cycle as well. Even in the winter.

micmay, be sure that you have the brake pedal depressed also. Your transfer case will not go into or come out of 4L until all of the safety measures are in place.

Vehicle stopped, brakes applied, auto tranny in "N" and then flip the switch into or out of 4L.

Thanks dzervit and Neil! I checked the manual on the 4 lo info. It does say you must have it in Neutral before you can get it into 4 lo. My 2002 didn't require anything but turning the switch. Go figure.
On the a/c, kinda sucks that the compressor will work no matter what. Especially with respect to the MPG. The truck is still the best one yet for me. I've loved them all, but this one raises the bar on ride, sound deadening and interior design.

Thanks again for the replies. This board is invaluable.
