Wheel offset question

I am getting conflicting info about wheel offset. I have been told that a less positive offset wheel will stick out from the vehicle more than a higher positive offset (+40 offset will stick out further than +44 offset). Yesterday I was talking the guy behind the counter at the local truck accessory store about wheels and he told me the opposite (+44 offset would stick out further than a +40 offset). Anyone know for sure? Thanks.

offset and backspacing

GB150, I believe the counter jockey was correct. Take the backspacing for example, going from the inner most face of the wheel and measuring to the outermost edge of the wheel the larger the number the further under the truck the tire would sit. Therefore, if the game remains the same... the +44mm offset would stick out farther from the center of the rim than the +40mm.
Be sure to verify this before spending all sorts of cash on wheels you don't like. I just scored a sweet deal on some American eagle wheels on ebay. It's worth a look if you're interested in saving some cash.

Thanks. I appreciate your response. That is what made sense to me, but I wanted to make sure before buying any wheels. I cant decide on which wheels to get. I guess I cant find exactly what I'm looking for. BlazinYeller04, which rims did you go with?
