I've been challenged...

My buddy just purchased a new toy and invited me to the track. When I purchased my truck, he got his panties in a bunch because his S-10 Extreme was no challenge.

I custom ordered a Reg. Cab Short Bed 4x2 with the 5.4L and a 3.73 Limited slip. So, it moves fairly well for the model it is.

He called me up and he purchased a Reg. Cab Short Bed Dodge Ram HEMI. I have no idea the gear ratio he has but I did ride in it. It aint no slouch thats for sure. But, I felt I could keep up.

I went to the Dodge Truck World website where HEMI heaven exists and checked out some stock 1/4 and 1/8 mile times. As I figured I am right in line with these guys.

Motor Trend yielded a 15.11 quarter mile at almost 90mph in the Reg Cab SB HEMI. On the website some guys are pulling anywhere from a 14.9 to 15.4's in the quarter and 9.9 to 10.4's in the 1/8th with the same model HEMI. Obviously depending on the driver and heat conditions there is a variance.

My stock 1/8 mile was 10.0 @ 70.4 MPH. I never ran the 1/4 bone stock.

After my Magnaflow exhaust( my only mod so far) I ran a 9.95@71 in the 1/8th and a 14.99 @ 89 in the 1/4.

I think the difference is the HEMI has about 45 more HP than mine but only 10lbs more torque. Plus, the F-150 has a much lower torque curve. I come out of the hole pretty quick with a 2.198 60 ft time. I can punch it from idle with NO tire spin at all.

So, it seems to be close...very close. I'll let you know how it goes in a few days...weather permitting.

I'm really interested to see how this goes. I'm suprised you can punch it with no tire spin--my supercrew w/ 3.55LS will spin the back tires when I stomp it from idle and a dead stop.

Ditto my Screw XLT with slightly larger 265 tires and 3.55 rear.

I have no idea why. Limited slip maybe? I have the 3.73 LS. Anyway, I can assure you there is no wheel spin. A few good chirps, but no spinning or smoking. I guess that is a good thing.

That is on 17" wheels with P235 R70's from the factory.

You're holding the brake and loading up the torque converter before your launch right?

when you hold the brake and load up the convertor like that you leave on the convertor stall, when you just hit it that makes the convertor flash higher than the stall some and gets the motor to its power curve sooner.

Yet you're not getting the wheels to spin?? My way you're Starting with the Engine at 2500, rpm's instead of 11. I'd do it both ways since you're at the track anyway. Maybe the new ones are different. I don't know.... I Do know I can light up the wheels if I want....

Man, I just keep my left foot on the brake and DO NOT REV the engine. I rest it there only to eliminate the delay of right foot brake to right foot gas. I punch it from IDLE and it chirps a bit and then hauls ***.

Mr brother has an 04 3.73LS on a Lariat SCAB and he says he gets no spin on launch.

The only time I got it to do that was on a hot asphalt road. I punched and smoked em' pretty good.

I have a 5.4 Lariat Screw with the 3.73 Limited slip rear, and I've never been able to spin the tires from idle.

Maybe it's a 3.73 thing?

I dunno but it's better than roasting them down.

Just hit it and haul *****

Hellbound,

Let me know when and where. I'd like to see this go down. I'm over here at Eglin, nice to see someone else from the area on the boards.

What color is your truck, haven't seen too many new F150's around. Mine's a silver supercab with the brushguard/toolbox(black). Definately havent' seen any new ones around here with any body armor.

Later, Jerry

It is True Blue Clearcoat metallic, Reg. Cab Short BEd, w foglights. It is an XL model with the stock 17' wheels and little tires. LOL!! I opted for them because I wasnt going to pay for upgraded rims/tires if I am changing them out anyway.

I am down here at Hurlburt Field in the military. What is your JOB?

Yeah, he has the 3.55 rear end base model with the HEMI. So, after looking up the times I think it will be close. I dont doubt he may pull on me but not by much. Anyway, he does have a lighter truck and a more powerful engine.

Also, I asked himto race today and he kind of tried to back out. I dont hink he has anything to worry about really. He should (statistically) beat me. He said I have to let him do "something" to if first before we race because I have an exhaust. My exhaust doesnt make up for 45 more HP, 10 LBS more torque and almost 100lbs lighter.

The only thing I think will help me is my gear ratio, lower torque curve and VCT (Variable Cam Timing). Otherwise, he has me in spades.
