Newbie with a question

Hi Folks- you have a great site here!!!

I am looking to buy a new truck in the near future and I am debating over 2WD and 4X4. Actually I don't want to spend the extra cash for 4X4.

I live in New England and we do have snow. But I learned to drive in a 3/4 ton van so I know how to drive in the snow with no weight in the back (not that its a lot of fun mind you).

So the question is for a few days a year is it worth it to spend 3000 bucks (ouch) or should I just make sure I have slip differential and call it a day?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the board, Snapper.

I can't answer your question, but consider this. If New England is anything like the Pacific Northwest, you'll eventually recover much of the initial cost of 4WD at trade-in time. Out here, hunters and others will pay $3000 for a 4WD piece of junk that would otherwise be worthless if only 2WD. 4WD gets THEM in and the DEER out.

Thanks for the input.

I also meant to ask- why Ford? Why not Chevy? Come on tell me!

Why not Nissan, Toyota, or Dodge? Too many reasons to detail here. Maybe 'Truck of the Year', hours of research, a test ride, a long gaze at the style/design, and ownership of 2 previous faultless Ford pickups summarizes it best!

DAMN!!!

That one reply could answer 1/2 of the posts around here. Very true! I might have to copy and paste that here and there!

It’s a judgment call, and it’s all yours: three grand isn’t much more tacked on price of a new truck. I opted for a 4by2 because I don’t go off road and Florida is kind of flat and minus any chance of snow that might need a 4x4.

If your not going to go off road I would say it’s a waste of money for a 4x4 in New England. I too live in New England and have had a few trucks all 2 wheel drive with “limited slip” rear-end.

As long as you have the limited slip rear end you should be fine…
