welcome on down here. I'm in Scottsdale
I just come from a whole bunch of Chevys to my new 04 STX and here in Arizona GM said use 10W30 (stock and in colder areas 5W30 synthetic). So I assume that the same is true for Ford engines. I think however that if you go to other viscosities you need to go with full synthetic oils.
My truck is about to get it's first oil change and I'm going with Royal Purple, pretty much the best oil you can get. expensive at $5-6 a quart but then you also don't need to change oil all that often either.

I just don't understand why there are some many questions. Ford built and designed the truck and motor. They don't make the oil but have it produced for their specs. They know what the motor needs because they designed and built it. Sure you can run other brands or weights of oil if you feel you are smarter than the Ford engineers. Its like investing in the stock market and trying to pick mutual funds or stocks that are going to outperform the S&P 500. You might get lucky and do it but if you want to be safe and know that what you have is a good thing then stick with the S&P 500 and the oil that Ford recommends.

Stepping off soapbox now.

No one claimed to be smarter than Ford Engineers. We just want to know if the Ford recommendations are based on Ford Engineer's knowledge or EPA/MPG/corporate politics. Many people believe that Ford Engineers may be overruled by corporate CEO's to produce better numbers....or is it the aftermarket oil corporations putting the ideas in our heads that we need SUV/4x4/synthetic/different weight etc.... I guess we will never know but it sure does do us good to argue till we are blue in the face and act like we all have the answers. I thought this board was for sharing opinions...not preaching.

I also would not have been able to buy my F-150 at 23 years old if I had stuck to just investing in the S&P 500.

Question A question

Personally, I go on Fords recommendation of 5W20. Out of curiosity’s what is the anticipated MPG difference between the various oils? Are we talking big numbers or not?

Well I changed my oil from the 5W-20 stock to 5W-30 Mobil1 about 500 miles ago and have averaged 12.75MPG. I'm going to switch to 0W-20 Mobil1 pretty soon and possibly adding an engine oil cooler because of the comment about the VVT operating on oil pressure.

I have noticed that the motor struggles with power until it hits about 4,000RPM and it almost seems like a turbo kicks in and gives me a lot of punch. I don't think the power difference between 3,500 and 4,000 should be that distinct, which makes me think the VVT is not operating as designed. I am trying to think how it worked before the oil change and I'm having a tough time remembering. maybe because the problem wasn't present.

Anyway I'll post my mileage after the change to 0W-20.

No preaching here just expressing my opinion just like everyone else. If you beat the S&P then you are one of the lucky ones, but that discussion should probably be saved for another message board. Congratulations on the new truck. I am on my second new F150 at the young age of 26. I too was 23 when I bought my first one.

Again just my opinion but I think the SUV/4x4/ crap is just a marketing scheme. Just because the vehicle has a truck frame and a gear drive in the front end, how does that make the inside of the motor different?

I surely don't have all the answers, but I am full of opinions.

Preach on Brotha!!

It is a marketing scheme like when everyone jumped on the Castrol boat

Ford takes bids on what oil they will put on their bottles

It might be Havoline it might be Kendall or who knows what, get one brand and stick with it and for gods sake dont take it to a JIFFY LUBE

I use 5w20 cause I’m lazy and let Ford change it.
They give me free lifetime oil changes and they use
Motorcraft 5W20

I use Valvoline 5w-20 and couldn't be happier. Truck runs like it's supposed too and that's all I need.

Speaking of being young and owning a brand new F-150, hell I've owned so many different trucks I lost count. I'm also 23 and this is my third F-150. I was 20 when I bought my first 2001 Lightning. I then bought another one at 22 but it was a 2003 Lightning. I used Redline 5w-20 on those trucks. I also have my 2000 Excursion which I can't seem to let go. I'm right now shopping for a Mach 1 to make up for my need for speed that I acquired from owning a Lightning. Trust me, I'll have my deposit ready for that 2006 Lightning before it even hits showrooms.

By the way, does anyone plan on supercharging their F-150 anytime soon.
