Time to write a letter about the gas prices
Ok, this is ridiculous! Gas has NEVER been this high in the Cincinnati area. I saw a sign for $1.99 and 9/10 this morning on my way in to work. I'll be writing my senators and congressman this morning via email. There's really no excuse for prices to be this high and someone needs to do something about it. It's not just hurting people who drive 'gas guzzlers' (it's not really 'hurting' me by the way), but this affects everything and everybody. Plane tickets, goods and services that need transportation at one point or another - like groceries, etc, etc. I hear it's much more than just the oil producers not pumping as much oil...it's more complicated than that, and I'd like to see someone do something about the things we CAN do something about.
Off to write my letters...

Good luck Lariatf150, the only problem with the current fuel prices is that no one has decreased their fuel consumption, so it's hard to believe the prices are too high, but then again, Bose sells enough of those stupid $500 CD/Wave radios to keep selling them. Seriously, it's like complaining that house prices have risen too much in the last five years, they can't havem they still sell like hotcakes.
1) We still have some of the lowest gas prices in the world. In Germany in 2000 and Greece in 2002 gas was almost $4 / gallon when I was there.
2) You're paying more for your gas than just what you pay at the pump. It's subsidized by the federal government, which is payed for by our income taxes.
We've been paying artificially low prices for gas at the pump for years compared with the rest of the world due to these subsidies. I agree, it's frustrating to be paying more (I'm paying more too). But we're still better off than most.

Gas in Eurpoe is $4 a gallon because $3.50 of that is tax. The US does not tax it's gasoline as much as the rest of the world, resulting in lower prices.
You can do what I did and get the Discover Card Gasoline Cashback Bonus Plus card and earn up to 10% back on your gas purchases. Cut some costs that way.
You should do anything you think will help.
When prices hit $2.00 per gallon, I started urinating in my gas tank every night when the neighbors can't see me. Not so much that it would cause the engine to miss but, enough to reduce my overall gas bill.
This weekend at a cookout my neighbor who drives an economy car asked me about the mileage I was getting in my "big truck".
I said, "Shut up and give me another beer."

gas card
I have a gas card and think it's great but it's really great for the oil companies, it has caused a truce in the gas wars.
I think my shell card saves me 14 cents at these prices, that means a competitor would have to cut shell by 15 before I would switch and I doubt if any of us would drive ouy of our way for a penny so it would be even more than that.
I'm not complaining or looking to get flamed just pointing out a benifit that is great for the oil companies.

The gas station I go to went up .05 in one day. ONE DAY! On Sunday it was $1.74. Monday, $1.79. I realize it's low compared to others here. But this is the highest I've ever paid. I really think they're sticking it to us because all of the other gas stations around the area were in the upper $1.80s, while this station was in the lower $1.70s. Obviously someone could keep it low for a while without losing cash. Now I think this station is just trying to catch up with the others because of the large disparity with the other stations. Around here Texaco is the worst. They're always about .10 higher than every other station.
We have a station here that is 10 cents cheaper than everybody else. The lines are six cars deep all day long which adds an extra half hour to getting gas. Even if you pump 30 gallons, that would only be a 3 dollar savings.
When I see those lines I just shake my head and go into 7 Eleven for another sixpack.

Yesterday is a prime example... TWENTY CENTS in less than 10 hours. Went to work a 7 ($1.79), came home around 5 (1.99). Gas never rises on a penny or two basis around here, it jumps by a dime (at a bare minimum) and then only trickles down by pennies.
I'm reconsidering that SuperDuty with the PSD.

Aside from the specific costs, Eurpoeans fuel IS more expensive because taxes are higher. Period. Even when oil is $20 US pwer barrel, European gas is still weay more expensive becasue of the taxes.
Yep. I was ecstatic when I paid $2.05 last week. I filled up yesterday at $2.17. The station right at the bottom of the street from my condo is peddling gas at $2.21. My 4.0L Ranger is not gas efficient by any means.
