Where to install brake controller

I've got to install a trailer brake controller but I hate to mess up my BEAUTIFUL dash. I have a Lariat without the center console. I thought about installing it in the little black box below the drink holder/ashtray unit. That inset is a little low to reach the controller for manual application of the brakes but I rarely ever need to do that anyway.

Anyone out there with suggestions?

Hey djLariat,

Funny those are my initials and truck too!

If you look under the dash, there are two spaces where the plastic dash recedes and the metal braces are showing. One to the right of the steering column and one to the left.
I mounted my trailer braker controller to the left this time. In all other trucks I had it on the right. The reason I put it on the left is because once(only once) I was motoring down a hill with my 27' travel trailer and it was very windy. A huge Semi passed me and sucked me over quite a bit. I started to compensate for the sway, and next thing you know the trailer is getting out of control. At this point I reached down and used the trailer brake, but I must admit, the scariest feeling was to leave my right hand off the steering wheel, and keep my left hand on. I always feel more comfortable steering with my right hand then left.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Thanks. I think I see the braces you're refering to. The one on the right has the computer diagnostic plug mounted on it, but it looks like I might still get a brake controller bracket on it. The one on the left looks great. I was just worried about hitting my shin on it getting in and out of the truck. I had one in a similar place on a E-150 van and bruised my shins a few times.
