5.4 Gas Mileage ?
I have read just about all the threads on this site and find them very informative,I love my new truck I bought it Feb.14th.My truck was built in 1-04. I dont seem to have any of the problems most people have experienced here. The one thing I have noticed is the little bit of lag when you get down on it but not to bad and the gas Milage is eating my lunch, with average driving Im getting about 13 mpg my truck has a 5.4 ,3.55 LS ,4x2 SCrew. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to improve this besides driving 45 mph all the time? I cant wait to buy some toys for this once more money comes.Id like to get the DVD system,I saw that Ford sells it for $1,200 but is that price good with truck purchase only or at anytime after? Thanks Take a look at my pics if you have time.

I have only had my truck for a two week and have about 1000 miles. My truck was built in Feb -04 and I have not yet experienced any of the issues I have been seeing on these boards. I just took a 5 hr road trip over weekend and got about 18 miles to gallon. I don't get as good milage in town but have I have not tracked this milage yet.
Good to hear there are people not experiencing the rear end problems I have been hearing about.

Thanks for the reply, No I have not had any problems yet?! I have 3,300 miles on mine and the A/C BTW is very cold within 10 seconds Ive measured it at 30 something degrees with the outside temp at 85 the gas mileage is my only beef but I guess its worth it to drive a sweet machine like this one!!! I have one more question to ad and that is, should you reset the MPG estimator every time you fill up or let it keep averaging indefinetly? Thanks
I have just started to do that. Yeah I drove a 4 cylinder ranger before so the fuel bill is something that I will have to get used to.
But these are bad @ss trucks
Well worth the big ticket price.

Just took a trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains from Chesapeake, VA yesterday. Round trip 479 miles, 24.7 gallons = 19.39 mpg. The gas gauge read a little over 1/4 tank left when I got back. This was computed by topping off before I left and topping off when I got back, then manually calculating the mileage. The computer mpg guesstimator said my mileage for the trip was 18.6.
This was with the A/C running the whole time, two passengers, and limited gear. It got up to 88 degrees, and the EATC system in full auto set to 68 was very comfortable. When the truck turned so that the full sun was on the dash sun load sensor, you could feel the air being diverted to the panel vents to compensate. Very cool.
I was very happy with the milege, considering the engine was dropping out of overdrive on the really steep hills so much that I just turned it off. Driving through the hills, I averaged about 35 mph. On the freeway to and from the B.R.M. I averaged 60 mph.
Another interesting tidbit. Turning Overdrive off really helped when going down the hills. The engine did a lot of the braking for me (I'm always trying to brake as little as possible to cut down on the dust!).

I am really impressed that you got 19mpg. I have the 5.3 4x4 3.73 LS and my last trip (which was 80% highway all Cruise Control at 75mph) I only pulled in 15mpg which I thought was great and probably the best I have seen. I did have a full truck and some cargo in the back but nothing that should make a 4mpg difference.
Thanks for reminding me. I edited the email to indicate my average speed. On the freeway I kept it down to 60. In the mountains, I averaged about 35 mph.
It makes a big difference going 60 versus 70 or 75!

I have been getting 16.5-17 and that is a combination of highway and city. I also had a 4 cylinder Ranger before this and it is great having the power to jump out on the highway. I love this Truck!
Still have yet to see 15 mpg no matter what driving I do. I came real close last fill up. 14.819 mpg. That is the closest. Closest before that was about 13.xx mpg.
We'll see what this tank has to offer. So far it is doing well from what I can see on the fuel guage.

I've got approx 8000 miles on my truck. I drive 100 miles a day, 5 days a week and I'm glad they are all highway. I average somewhere between 16.5-17.0 mpg. I would say my average speed is 70mph. Hard to calculate city for me.

Most people drive about 5 mph above the speed limit, whatever that may be, and just because I'm climbing a hill doesn't mean I'm going to drop down to 35.
We have pretty varied terrain here, and when I hit the mountains I carry the same or close speed I would in the flats.
The best the 5.4/3.73 has ever done for me under real world conditions was 15.4 mpg, and that was at 82 mph on 200 miles of flat Kansas prarie with no a.c., windows up and minimal (< 15 mph) wind.
If I'd have dropped the speed down to 45 mph, I probably could have coaxed 20 mpg out of it, but thats not gonna happen.
Thats All I was hoping for was somewhere in the middle of what is on the sticker what I average is at the lower end of 12.9 mpg. I drive a 99 150 4x4 w/ the 5.4 and now matter how I drive it ,it seems to get 17mpg no matter what and it has 92,000 miles on it? Does anyone know if you should reset the guesstimator after each fill up or leave it alone. I reset it once and my mileage read 16 and 17 but after a couple of tanks of fuel it sunk?
