Troyer vs. Ford Chip Flash

Stupid question. If Ford dealers are now flashing chips with their latest software, what's the difference between what Ford and Troyer are doing? In addition, wouldn't the warranty issues be mute if you had your chip flashed by the dealer?

If I am correct, and correct me if I am wrong.

The stage 1 upgrade from Troyer is also parts upgrade as well.

Ford just upgrades the puter on the truck.
Troyer has mechanical performance upgrades.

Cant tell you what ford does, but Troyer Stage 1 is 3 things, PCM retuning for either 87 or 93 octane, 93 will give you the most gains but you will have use premium fuel all the time $, the stock air intake is replaced with an Airaid air intake and a cat back exhaust, stage 1 comes with a single in single out but you can change that and go with different configurations more $. Stage 1 is plus or minus $1100, it can all be self installed real easy.

Stage 1 includes intakes and exhaust also but Troyer charges like 450 or something just for the chip flash?? I read that they take off the top speed limiter at Troyer and I doubt that the Ford dealers would do that, but if we are just talking about adjusting the shifting points as described in an ealier thread - I am thinking of just updating my software to eliminate that little throttle lag I experience.

Troyer does a performance tuning of the chip, whereas Ford only does reflashes to update the software to correct problems with older versions.

I guess it's like the difference in getting a regular tune-up for your car and getting the car "tuned" for optimum performance.

JohnandDar got just the chip tuning and did not opt for the intake or exhaust and posted a really good review of the retuned chip's performance.

So, now I have a question (imagine that, huh)

If a reflash at your local Ford Service Dept. is somewhat (SOMEWHAT) the same as a Troyer stage one ($1100+), why not just go to the dealership and have it done for free?

That doesn't sound right. I am obviously LOST and CONFUSED.......

The pcm actually goes to Florida to I think it was Custom Tuniing or something Troyer reviews with you your driving preferences, towing , octane use, and they oreview with Custom tuning, I shipped my board directly to Florida. Troyer coordinates the whole process. Its worth the upgrade. I think

Thanks VTN. I think I read that post. There was another post today called "I just got my truck reflashed" (I think) and the author stated increased RPM shift points. Increased RPM shift points is something I have been wanting.

It would be pretty awesome if Ford were to offer various chip setting that were tailored to driving needs/wants. The technology (software tuning) is obviously fairly easy to modify - Troyer.

Think about having the ability to set/adjust "your" truck" to meet "your" requirements. I think it would be fairly easy to do this for Ford, and I would be a willing beta tester. I am going on a trip to the desert this weekend and would love to start the truck off with a milage tuning and then adjust it on the fly for performance tuning.

Just a thought from a sales dude!

Peace
Tim

Alright !

I am stopping by Ford on my way home to discuss the 'reflash' and get to the bottom of it.

My brain is too small for all this

My understanding is the Ford re-flash is not an optimum tune for our trucks, but fixes as problems have come about. They let it run a little richer and keep the shift points relativley mellow compared to the CUSTOM tune that can be had from Troyer. Not to mention when the programer comes out, you will have three tunings to choose from depending on your needs and will also revert the chip back to stock when you have to take the truck in for warranty work.

I saw a nice tuner on a show last weekend that was on the fly. I think it was bulldog or something like that. They had it on a Chevy Diesel and it was adjustable on the fly. It also comes with a computer on the dash giving instant readouts of 1/4 mile, 60 ft. and lots of other info. I was digging the on the fly part of it and it was all controlled by the computer on the dash.

In short, the Ford reflash is far from any custom tuning from anyone.

Sticker Steve is right. The Ford reflash is not intended to be for optimum tuning, but instead for optimum driveability. Softer shifting, more linear acceleration, etc. I had my PCM, which is code BME9, reflashed about a month ago and have noticed no real difference. My shifts are still soft and way too early - 4800 at WOT. My throttle response is the same, which is to say that it blows. I have almost 10K miles now since I took delivery on Nov. 24th and I will probably go with the Superchips tuning before too long. I had Superchips in my last 3 F-150's and while I can't say the HP gains were huge, it did make my trucks more fun to drive.
