What is this lock for?

Maybe I am thinking too hard. What is this lock for? It is on the right side of the license plate. Here are two pictures...one of the lock in place, and the other with the lock taken out.

It’s for removing the spare tire. I got a flat tire three weeks ago and I had to use the key to remove the lock to get to the spare tire. I have the Ford Roadside Assissantce free for 36,000 miles, but I felt that it would be faster for me to remove the tire myself than call someone to do it. Basically in the back of the Supercrew, under the right seat, there is the jack and several metal parts that you put together and put through the hole to let down the tire. Actually, it’s pretty fun to do.

Well I'll be damned...page 203 of the owners manual. I was looking all over the dang thing trying to find out what it was...well, everywhere except page 203. I would have NEVER thought it had anything to do with the spare. Pretty cool though. I guess people will have a hard time stealing the spare without the key!

Thanks for the reply.

Yea, that was the motive of Ford putting the lock there. Too many owners were getting their spares stolen. What is this world coming to!

wont a hammer just knock that lock right off. It would fall behind the bumper and to the ground?

Yes, a hammer would probably knock the lock off. A hammer will also break the glass in the doors so I guess that means we don't need door locks either.
