FOB stands for???

Regarding key 'fob'...what does the FOB stand for? I've been trying to guess, but nothing makes sense.

It's not an acronym...

fob:noun
Etymology: perhaps akin to German dialect Fuppe pocket
1 : WATCH POCKET
2 : a short strap, ribbon, or chain attached especially to a pocket watch
3 : an ornament attached to a fob chain

They adapted the word from it's historical use on a watch chain to it's current use on a keychain, because there was too much disagreement on whether to use "thingamabob" or "doohickey" instead.

That concludes today's Word Of The Day. Tomorrow's word will be acronym.

or it could be "free on board" which is a shipping term.

I take it you mean in the context of the remote key fob in which case refer to JohnandDar's definition.

If the FOB is on a waybill or Bill of Laiding it will stand for "Freight Out Bound"

Usually the "fob" will have either "destination" or "origin" after it.
Destination means the shipper will be liable for the product until it reaches its destination.
Origin: as soon as the product leaves the shippers dock, they are no longer responsibile for it.

25ft? Mine only works about 10ft, I wonder if I can double it by squashing two batteries in there

Yeah, I noticed that the fob only works from very short range as well. I thought it was just my battery. I could be half way across the parking lot with my Explorer. But with the F-150, it's almost like I have to be inside the vehicle for it to work.

I know for sure I've hit the button on mine about 30 ft away and it works fine.
