Differential howl?????

What began as a slight whine at 55 to 65 mph when new is now, at 4500 miles, an annoying howl. I have the 3.73 LSD that has had the clutch pack upgrade. I have seen a few posts on this subject but nothing on dealer response and/or solution. Anything new? Before seeing the dealer I like to have as much information as possible.

You sure it's in the rear? I had a whine that I took in right after I heard it. It was the tranny and they gave me a shiny new one for my trouble.

Indeed, it may be the tranny. The whine begins at about 52mph and is really loud in the 60mph range then tapers off and is gone by 65 or so. Is this similar to the sound yours made? Backing off on the throttle reduces the noise somewhat.

My 02 Screw had the same whine and howl. They replaced the complete rear end. No problems since. The service said I should wait and see if the gears would lap themselves after break in, but he replaced it...

Nope.

The noise in my truck was present at any speed when the engine was under load (accelerating, going up hill etc.)

Bill, mine does the exact thing. Mine starts right at 50mph and is gone by the time I hit around 60. I don't know what it is.

Indy, how many miles on yours? Has the sound gotten louder as mileage increases? Mine has gotten much louder since about 3000 miles and is now so annoying that I'll take it to the dealer before I make another out of town road trip. I will post here when I find out more.

Mine was only between 40 and 45 mph (about 43 to be exact, or you could say, at it's loudest). They were going to replace the ring & pinion but instead opted to just replace the entire axle. Hence, no more whine.

Mine has around 4500 miles on it. I didn't notice it doing it until around the last couple of weeks. It's possible it has been doing it for awhile. It may now just be getting loud enough for me to notice. Please do let us know what you find out at the dealer.

Bill Meyer and others:

How many of you that are experiencing this "howl" have had the clutch pack upgrade?

I just got my truck back yesterday from the dealer. They put in the clutch pack and now my truck howl right about 50 mph.

Does this have to do with the clutch pack? My truck never howled prior to this.

I experienced the "howl" within the first 1,000 miles or so. After it was "broke-in" (I have about 3500 miles on it now), it seems to have "disappeard".

Maybe I'm just lucky?

Dealer told me he is going to replace the ring and pinion when he replaces the clutch pack. Howling comes fron incorrect setup on ring and pinion. Mine has had a slight howl since around 2000 miles but has gotten worse(7000 miles). Going to do the repairs on 4/2 so I hope it takes care of it..

I didn't have the clutch packs replaced, just a rear axle.
