Stereo Upgrade Without A Sub

Has anyone performed any stereo upgrades without adding a sub? I have the base single CD player in a SuperCab. While it's not the best I've ever heard, I am impressed by a base system from the factory. If the bass were a bit richer and the highs a little crisper, I would almost say I would be completely satisfied.(darn Ford for not offering the audiophile in the XLT). I'm not opposed to adding a sub, but I like the space under the seat. I realize a lot of the younger members go for max bass, but a full rich sound that I can crank is good for me (pushing 40, must be old age setting in). I would be very interested to hear about any speaker, amp/speaker upgrades.

Talking

I had Infinity's in my '93 Ranger. They were good, but lacked the bass of the Sony's they replaced. Did you notice a big difference? The whole shebang is nice, but moderation is good to. The interior is so quiet, you don't need a lot of power. I plan to upgrade the speakers and add an amp if it's not quite right. Train horns, huh? That oughtta get people out of your way!

Replaced all four speakers in my XLT Screw with Rockford Fosgate 6x8's (on sale for $39.99/pair from Crutchfield). Stereo sounds great, have to turn the base down on or two notches on some CD's, made a big difference in the clarity of highs and lows.

How do you remove the rear speakers in the Screw. The ones in front doors are easy but I can't seem to get the cover for the rear doors off. Thanks in advance.

Look into Alpine Type R 5x8's and to make life easy, a small four channel amp that has high inputs. Something 50 RMS X 4 would be a great place to start. A setup like this should be more than enough for what your looking for and will put out a decent bass response.

If money is not an issue, look into CDT 5.25" - 6.5" components and more power. The more headroom you have between the amps and drivers will make it cleaner when you feel like turnin it up a bit. The CDT's will give you excellent imaging!

All this gear can be had on the net for not much money. If you need any leads, let me know.

Not sure how the screw comes appart. The Scab requires the door panel to come off.

Here you go. Step by step on how to remove rear door panel.

I installed Infinitys all around without an amp first. The stock speakers sounded better because of not enough wattage to the Infinitys. Added an amp, and they sounded great. Just go with aftermarket speakers that sound good to you. Good to all the local shops to hear diff. brands.
I am 39 and still like good bass. I'm not looking to blow windows out or compete, I just like all kinds of music and I like to hear it without any loss of frq. at any range. Look in my gallery below to see everything installed.
Good luck!!

I agree.... If you go with new speakers you need to get a small amp to wake them babies up.... Other wise you may lose some of the sound quailty. Aftermarket speakers need more power than the stock ones.

My Ranger in my gallery had 6x8 Pioneer Speakers and a 4 channel Alpine amp. I also threw in a Sony 7-band equalizer. The bass was very tight but not overpowering and the highs very crisp. I didn't really need a sub.

I plan to do the same thing with my Screw. I was thinking about a sub but I don't want to give up the room.

I think a good set of aftermarket 6x8's all around and a decent 4-channel amp would suffice, without getting too crazy or expensive.

The stock radio sounds great and I will probably keep.

Does anyone know what brand of speakers/amp/head unit Ford used in the audiophile system? It really sounds awesome.

what kind of amp would you recommend for some Infinity Kappa 572.5cf speakers?

Size: 5 x 7
Sensitivity: 90 dB
Frequency Response: 40-21,000 Hz
Recommended RMS Power: 100W
Peak Power Handling: 300W
Impedance: 4 ohms

thats the info and ive been looking for a nice 4 channel amp thatll wake these babies up. also keep in mind i dont have a radio other than my stock one. would i need some wiring also?

and yes the train horns are damn loud

Dusty just to let you know they are distributed to Ford by Visteon but they are made by Boston Acoustic. Also everyone out there should know that if you change out your stock head unit for an aftermarket you will have to remove the amp that came with the audiophile and replace it with whatevere you want i chose an alpine 50x2. TIP when hooking up the new 2 channel only use 1 positive and 1 negative leave the other 2 cut the speaker is built kinda strange to not blow with the stack amp but let me tell you for a little 8 you can make it really perform with a little tinkering. i will eventually change it because I am used to alot of Bass in all my other vehicles but I was impressed with this one.

Yes, you can check it out in my gallery. Still thinking about adding subs though. It sounds good without subs, but just like haveing the big bass every now and then with certain songs.

I too went complete aftermarket. I have a Pioneer 2004 mp3 unit in the dash, Kicker components in the front doors, kicker coax in the rear and a pair of 10s under the rear bench in a box from Soundoffaudio.com (great box!!! excellent price!!!)
Before the subs where in it sounded great too but two down firing tens gives you that kick in the back while you are driving. The best is rolling up to another pickup, rolling down the Scab rear windows and cranking the volume. Not what you expected from a pickup.

Oh and if you are upset you lose the room under the rear seat, I found that a great place to store things its in that long flat area behind the rear window....I think its called "the bed"
