4.6 or 5.4 ??
Hello, I found this forum last night and it looks great. What does everyone think is the ultimate engine to get for an extra cab model? I will not be towing much, but want to have power when needed. How is fuel economy? Thanks Manny
Well, go for the 5.4L of course. Fuel ecconomy is equal.
I went with the 4.6L more becuase of the deal I got, and the fact that even it has to much power for my sig other that daily drives it. I towed my 03 highly modified Rubicon with it, the 3.73 gears seemed to do well with the 4klbs to 5klbs load on it. I pulled it up some steep grades out of Denver here into the Mtn's. Seemed better than expected really. But I also knew that $23k was about it for me as far as a new 4x4 truck went anyways.

I drove the 5.4 then the 4.6 then the 5.4, to me the 5.4 was smoother, not sure if that makes sense, but it seemed not to work as hard, even during the test drive. BUt I guess it really depends what you intend to use it for, me, I own nothing to tow, but I like the ride better, so I went with the 5.4. I figured "just in case" and being my first truck ever, in my short 40 year life span, I got what I wanted!
Yep, go with the 5.4 if you've got a choice. I bought mine off the lot and got the 4.6 and it's by no means horrible, but for the same gas mileage; Why not have the extra power?

5.4!!! No doubt!
This truck is heavier than most (500-800lbs over the '03 bodystyle depending on options). No difference in gas mileage.
Besides Ford upgraded the 5.4 in '04 with the 3 valve design that boosted it from 260 HP to 300 HP.
The 4.6 is the same as old model - 231 HP.

The 4.6 will get 2 mpg better gas mileage and will cost $1000. less to buy, that will buy alittle gas. I guess if and when I buy another new truck I will go back to the 4.6 engine. I would have got it this time if they had used the 3-valve. The 3 valve is coming in 05 or 06.
