Like I said, you don't feel it as much in the newer cars because they have them set up to slip very easily. Have you ever driven a 70's Camaro or any other muscle car with a built up posi rear end?? Come on, this is a common thing. Those things would hop all over the place while making tight turns.

Exactly, the "Friction Modifier" makes the clutches Slip more smoothely/easily...

It shouldn't shudder, or shimmy. You'll just sometimes feel the clutches grab a little, that's all. There's obviously a problem with some of the new Ford's rear end if they're shuddering going in a straight line.

I'm not going to argue, but I'm not making this up...

My 4x2 Supercrew with 4600 miles and 3.55 LS rearend would shudder about twice a week when making a left hand turn from a stop under acceleration. After reading this post I spoke with my service dept, told of my problem, and he said if they couldn't duplicate the problem they would do nothing. Since it doesn't occur that often, I didn't take it in as I figured I would take the chance of wasting my time and nothing being done anyway or the tech might try to tear the truck up on the road test (am weird I guess). I dropped the rearend cover myself and drained into a clean pan. The grease was grey dishwater colored with no metallic shavings but rather from the friction material on the clutch packs I guess. I was going to install some Amsoil 75W90 Series 2000 gear oil I had, but decided against it and purchased 3 qts of 75W90 Motorcraft synthetic gear oil at $17 a qt with a bottle of friction modifier. Kept a copy of the receipt on the gear oil as I expect further problems down the road with the clutch pack. The bottom of the rearend housing was also clean with no debris. Will have to see if and how long this new gear oil lasts before the shudder occurs again, if it does.

O.K., as I stated above, I had my appointment with my Ford Service Dept. today. I must say that I was/am pleasantly surprised at the outcome. I dropped my vehicle off last night (Sunday) so that could drive the truck from a cold start to experience the "shudder" today (Monday morning). I got a call at 9:15AM today from the Service Dept. letting me know that my truck was ready for pick-up. They said the Oil-change was done and the "AXLE CLUTCH PACK" has been ordered to fix the shudder problem!!!! I wrote a letter last night explaining how to duplicate the shudder problem, and put it in the Key Drop-Off Box last night at the Service Dept. The letter I wrote was nothing very detailed, but I did explain exactly what to do to reproduce the shudder (I can post this letter if someone would like to see/use it for themselves).

Anyway, here is the Special Service Message and TSB regarding the Shudder problem. Note: The Service Dept. Manager immediately went to their Ford database to search for the term "Shudder" to find this info. He advised me that he did not even take the truck out for a test drive!!! They just ordered a new clutch pack.

Also note that in the Special Service Message that they talk about the Shudder feeling as if it comes from the FRONT AXLE OR THE STEERING GEAR!!! This is exactly what some other folks have said about the sensation. So, I guess it may be the Rear End Clutch Pack even though you feel the sensation in the Steering (Front End).....

Again, here is the receipt the Service Dept. gave me for the newly oedered Rear End Clutch Pack:

<Bump>

Just for awareness, in that Ford is aware, and if you read the above post, you will be aware to.

I doubt any new trucks coming off the line are going to have this shudder issue, since Ford has acknowledged it.

My question/curiosity is: What's the difference between the bad Clutch Pack and the new ones they are putting into these vehicles to resolve the issue....????

I have a truck built in 1/04 and have the vibration issue at 40-55mph. Took my truck in for the second time this morning. The first time I took it in, they did a road force balance and took care of a vibration problem at 70+mph.
They just called me back a couple of minutes ago and said that both passenger side tires had small splits in the steel belts. For the record, I have the standard BFG A/T tires that come on the Lariet.
It's going to take 2 weeks to get replacements in. The service guy told me that there were no safty concerns, just have to live with the vibration until the new tires come in. He seemed almost positive that this was the problem. Also, he did a check on the vibration kit and clutch pack and said that since my truck was a late model, these problems should have already been addressed.

I wonder if I'm the only one with a tire problem like this??
Anyone out there with any comments?

shudder fixed

Just wanted to leave my two cents. I just brought my truck into te dealership before I investigated this online, sure enough they diagnosed this over the phone, a qwick road test and it was confirmed, the clutch pack needed replacement, its done. As far as other problems with regards to road vibration, I just received an updated warranty extension on my tires, now they are covered on the vehicle warranty for up to 3 years 36,000 miles. Specifically the Ford update talks about: if you experience vibrations from the wheels at speed your tires are defective.

goodluck,

Stephen Tise

Good grief. My dealer told me they were replacing it and I didn't even ask about it or mention it was a problem. It was in for something else and the tech noticed it and so they came out and said hey you need a new clutch pack...when do you want to schedule it? I'm like...uh...next Friday I guess.

They did put the additive in AFTER replacing it. I saw it on the work order.

I had the clutch packs replaced in my FX4 about 2 months ago because I had a pretty bad shudder at the first stop when it was cold. It fixed her right up...

Unfortunatly, when they replaced the clutch packs, they screwed something else up and caused a popping feeling everytime I started off from a stop.

Took the truck back in... I've got a new drive shaft on order. Do you guys know if they replace the drive shafts with the new and improved aluminum ones?
