Question Symptoms That Require The PCM Reflash!!

Brought my truck into the dealership today for it's first service and I mentioned the PCM reflash to the service rep I spoke with. He said it was needed on some but not all F-150's and he would check to see if mine needed it. When I got back I spoke to a different service rep and there was no mention of the PCM reflash now did it show up on my service slip. I'm just wondering what symptoms would require this?

Thats a good question. I asked my service guy about the outside temperature reading and the effect on the AC and he said it only applied if you have the auto environmental control and he didn't know of anything else.

Had mine reflashed on Monday. All I did when I took it in was tell them about the temp gauge being off by 15 at any given point. Nothing else was asked and on my invoice it was listed under the warranty repair (reprogrammed pcm per ssm17261). It fixed the temp sensor so far and got rid of the throttle lag (seems like it has more power off the bottom by a lot and I am getting better gas mileage since the reflash). Bad news was they wouldn't do anything about the rear end shudder until ford puts out a tsb for it (said they could not duplicate the problem but was real bad leaving the dealer lot). Anyway good luck on getting it fixed.

Lanceparkhurst,

Just curious, what was the build date of your vehicle?

Was your temp really off by 15, or did you exagerate a bit to make SURE they would reflash without an arguement?

Any driveability complaints should trigger them to check it out with their WDS. If it is updated regularly via the web, it should tell them that there is an update available.

Symptoms would include:
Throttle lag
Transmission shift quality
In dash digital temp off
Rotten egg stink

Dealerships will not do a reflash just because a customer asks for it. They need to hear that there is a driveability issue to get them to hook up a WDS. Once they do, the WDS will interrogate your vehicle's PCM. If there is an update available for that vehicle, it will prompt the technician to install it.

Yellow I am getting about 1.5 mpg better than I got with the old flash (but the weather has really warmed up here so that could be the difference). blg615 yes the temp was 15 degrees off and that was them saying that not me (printed on the service invoice).
Dusty1 my truck was born on 9/03 according to the door sticker.

lanceparkhurst,
The reason I asked about the 15 degrees is that mine is always about 2 or 3 off. But, now I guess thats within normal tolerance. I wasn't sure if the reflash was for all variances or just the very noticable ones. Thanks.
