Lastest PCM udpate

Hey all,

I'm taking my Scab into the dealer today for some maintenance:

1. rear shudder problem with LSD 3.73
2. steering wheel rub
3. update PCM (hopefully help a bit with throttle response as others have noticed)

I have spoken with 3 area dealers (including the purchasing one) and none have heard of any problems with the rear clutch packs, or the poor throttle response from the fly-by-wire. Am I in a timewarp here? It seems that there is a ton of folks compaining about these problems (as well as others), yet 3 major area dealers haven't heard a peep?! Seems odd, in addition to making it tougher to prove my case.

One last thing, does anyone know of the last PCM update version or number, so that I can go armed with it. Latest I heard was B29 something.something from some sort of internal ford website.

Appreciate it,
- Justin

PCM Update

I had the PCM update a couple of weeks ago to take care of the outside temp indication problem. It did cure that problem but it appears to me that the PCM reflash has resulted in a slight hesitation when it shifts from 1st to 2nd. May just be me but I am going to ask about it at my next visit. Don't know of anything else the reflash is supposed to cure except ambient temp issue. I have not noticed the drive by wire hesitation condition that some have described.

i took mine in last week and they updated the PCM for a P2106 error code. My truck kept going into engine failsafe mode. It not only fixed that but my throttle has no hesitation at all now.b

hmmm....nice, no throttle lag.

every 04 F-150 I drove had that lag. it isn't a flaw per se, but a design issue. when at a stop, you mash the pedal and the truck hesitates just for a split second and then gets roaring. it is the computer and i think it can easily be fixed, if Ford wants to. it sounds like csarkis7 is in luck. it's not a surprise that dealers don't know about it because it is not a real problem, just an improvement that would be nice. the clutch pack issue sounds like something that dealers have done to fix some trucks, but I'm not sure if it has been instituted by Ford as a fix.

csarkis7, let us know if the reflash fixes your problem, I have the same issue with my truck and the reflash fixed it for about 230 miles then it returned. now it's in the shop waiting for a new throttle body. It's back ordered so I don't know when I get my truck back. and if you wouldn't mind, read this thread and tell me what you think.

I will let you know if the truck has a relapse into failsafe mode. I hope it doesn't, it is a pain having a brand new truck with such a annoying problem!!

My truck is due for its first service next Tuesday. Will Ford just automatically update my PCM or do I have to ask for it????? Will they do it even if I have no problems.

Thumbs down F150 problems

Hello-

I have also had some problems with my truck . To list a few:

1). Rear end shudder from Day One. - Have tried the following:a). move the pinion angle 3 degrees plus or minus both ways with no luck b).TSB 0-41-6 (remove driveshaft and pack slip joint yoke with special Ford Teflon Grease-no change) c). LS clutches are not the problem , as truck shudders from a start in forward all the time, but does not shudder when backing up) d). Was told that some people have had their transmissions replaced due to an issue with the front pump, and their shudder went away. e).No help from Ford at this time

2). Sluggish throttle response -had PCM re-flashed to correct notorious temp. sensor two times before getting that fixed, but engine has not changed- Also: Orange wrench light has come on a couple of times, but went out..,.AND- some times after truck has been parked for maybe an hr or so-When I back up out of the driveway to go forward- TRruck starts to buck , and you can watch the tach go up and down for a couple of blocks before it settles out!

3). Wind rush noise from the back doors on both sides...Doors have been tightened up , but the noise sounds like it is coming from the small glass areas on the rear regular cab doors(which are a total waste by the way!) I told the dealer to take the covers off the rear doors to find the wind leak-really gets aggravating at 65-70 mph!

Anyone else have any of these similar problems??
Just wondering how others are doing with these 'wondertrucks'

The same thing happened to me last night leaving the gym I think! 6k miles, never seen it before, but I had been in the gym for a little under 2 hours and when I started to go forward the truck lurched two or three times. I stopped for a second, confusedly, and then started to go again and it didn't do it anymore. They were small lurches and I had just done legs so I wasn't sure if I had just been hamfisting the throttle but I didn't think so.

I too had the shudder upon start a week or so ago. I started the truck from a parking lot, hit the gas lightly, it "bounced" 3 or 4 times, I let up on the gas, tried again and it was fine. Is this the "clutch pack" lsd slip that everyone is talking about?

I'm getting this low speed surging too. It only lasts a few seconds and seems to be fuel delivery related. The first few times it happened was on cold start up. But recently, it's done it when it's warm too.

My service department claims that there are no PCM updates in existance - when clearly there are - so I plan to wait until they get up to speed in servicing the '04s before I take it in.

My dealership once laid claim to be the "Worlds Largest Ford Dealer". It amazes me how little they know about these new trucks. They seem clueless and at this point I'm afraid to let them touch it!

Lurch Hesitation

Clem,

Seems like there about 1,000 "Worlds Largest Ford Dealerships" in the USA LOL

I have driven 6 different 4x4 SuperCrews (4 Lariat and 2 FX4's). Only one of those had the Lurch/Surge/Hesitation when starting from a regualr stop light. To me it was strictly an engine problem, fuel or electric. That truck had about 400 miles on it. It did it almost all the time. It was a truck made last September, and was one of the test drive vehicles I used.

We currently have two 4x4 SuperCrews in the family, one FX4 (9,000 miles made in Sept) and one Lariat (2,500 miles made in Dec), neither have the problem. Both do have the normal LSD skip hop and jump, when turning in tight corners in sand or gravel, but that is normal for LSD, which both these trucks have.

Our next Lariat should be here in about two weeks. If it works as good as the others I will be happy. If it works like the one bad one I drove I would not be happy.

Well I guess the PCM update did not work for me afterall. The hesitation problem is still fixed but it went into engine failsafe mode again today, and the check engine light remains on. I placed a call to the dealer today at noon and they have yet to call me back. I will keep you guys updated.
