Had fun today!
All,
Got to take my new F-150 out today, and get it dirty.....
My 17yr old daughter slid her car off the road in a snow storm today, and put it in a ditch...... She is ok, but I got to hook her up, and pull the car out of the ditch. Boy, was it stuck! Up to the floor boards in packed roadside snow about 20' out from the road-side. Hooked up the jerk strap, put her in 4-low, and pulled her out no problem-o.
Just had to add to the brag list....

Tow straps
What are the real world guidelines that you guys use when pulling people out of ditches and things like that?
I am just curious about how to know when you are trying to pull too much and are in danger of bending or breaking something on your truck. The most failsafe thing I can come up with so far is to use a towstrap that has a rated strength that is equal or lesser than the rated towing power of the truck. That way if that weight is exceeded the strap will break without damage to the truck?
Just a thought.

I'm sure you didn't do the amount of damage that this guy did on the car he tried to tow out

That video is why you have to be really careful about pulling strangers out of the snow. You might end up with them or their insurance company suing you.
His biggest mistake was bottoming the car out on the snow so the full weight of the car was being dragged. What idiots. He should have gently jerked him in the opposite direction to put the wheels back on the ground.
