The PCM's are the same if you look on the Ford website. The intake manifolds are very different. The 5.4L is a 3V where the 4.6 is a 2V, therefore the 5.4L utilizes duel IMRC's to maximize power.

Interesting. I'll go back the Ford website, I didn't exactly see how to compare beyond the basic engine configuration.

I just found in the test drives, which included going up I-70 out of Denver into the Mountains. That the 4.6L regular cab with 3.73 diff. gears, performed surprisingly equal to the 5.4L SuperCab, with the 3.55 (or whatever it is exactly) diff gears. (Added weight and weaker ring & pinion gears is what I percieved may have been the equalizers)

Of course this was empty weight, no towing, so probably was not a fair comparison still. I will be pulling some serious weight over the mountains to Utah soon enough with it, so we shall see.

PS: I must qualify that I am no speed / excelloration person. If the truck pulls 65mph over the Mountains, I will be very impressed with it. Looks like about 5800 lbs, is the weight I will be pulling / carry'n.

1000lbs Slide-in Pop-Up camper
4500lbs Jeep Rubicon in tow
300lbs, gear ect..ect..

I would get the 5.4 over the 4.6 any day. I have one of each in my vehicles and the 5.4 pulls my 26' camper or 21' boat without problems. Can't say the same for my 4.6L. The mileage is about the same.

Just shut the overdrive off on the passes and you should be fine.

My 5.4 FX4 will pull Floyd Hill @80 in 3rd without downshifting to 2nd. I have 3.73 LS.

Only recommendation I would have is if the 4.6 struggles with the added weight of what you are towing, downshift a gear rather than letting the tranny hunt all over the place....

Thanks for the tips Blitzkrieg.

I figured OD Off was a given. I think if I had went SuperCab, I would of definetly went with the 5.4L and the 3.73 gears. As it is, I am actually impressed with the power for my Regular Cab version.

Hey Yankee How much weight is the heaviest of those two? If you don't mind me asking.

The 5.4 is definetly stronger, but I have both. The 4.6 in the wife's explorer with a 5 speed auto is more than enough in that vehicle. I accelerates extremely well. However, I have always been the type to get the most motor available. In my opinion its worth the extra money anyday....

I for went it, when they came up with a $23,300 price for the one I got, that had a $28k MSRP Sticker on it. This is a daily driver for my significant other, and the 4.6L has to much power for her as it is..... lol I am fairly secure with the choice. But the moment of truth will be when towing over the Contenental Divide I suppose.

I was pleasently surprised at the roominess of the Regular Cab too behind the seats. I had thought no way on that before I looked at them, but once again, the 126 WB is almost to big as it is for the one that daily drives it.

Thanks for all the comments, and keep em comming.
