check engine light

well I've had my STX for about 2 months now and just a couple weeks ago my check engine light came on (about 5000 miles). I was really mad so I took it to my local dealer and left it for a day while I drove my 84 year old grandpa's 03 Harley to school . When I came back they told me they had checked it out and told me what the problem was.......
They told me that my light came on because I had got the gas cap strap twisted up. The problem took 15 seconds to fix. I don't see how something that simple could cause the check engine light to come on. I told you guys this for future reference in case your check engine lights ever come on You could check that first.

did you just get gas? sometimes if you get some bad gas the light will come on as well. I never get gas at a station that has the truck pumping new gas in. it mixes up all the water and what ever else is in the stations tank.

just another idea.

If you dont get the gas cap on all the way it can cause the check engine light to come on. If you just got gas and the tether twisted on you, you may not have seated the gas cap all the way. This causes the tank to not vent properly and the light comes on. Hope this helps.
