High Pitch Whine

Not me whining, my truck.

I have about 1100 miles on my truck and I'm noticing a high pitch whine around 3000 RPM. It follows with the RPM and I can hear it in any gear. It doesn't whine in park or neutral. Any ideas?

Going to bring it up when she goes in for an oil change on Monday.

Probably a different sort of whine than mine. Mine is related to truck speed rather than engine speed. It first appeared around 1000 miles, and has gradually gotten worse. The dealer looked at it in Dec, pinpointed it to the differential, and pronounced it within operational tolerance. However, it is getting worse. Truck runs great, though, so this is a minor annoyance for now. I plan to wait for the hot weather and see what effect higher temps have on it. Perhaps by early summer it will be so bad that they will agree it is out of tolerance and replace or repair the diff.

Oddly, my 03 XLT had a similar whine, though at a different speed range. This kind of makes me think maybe it is just my ears, which are those of a musician who hears every little thing.

I don't know what those numbers mean. I've got a 3.73 regular axle.

What do the numbers mean, and how do I locate them?

Note:
The whine is coming from the front of the truck

I too have a high pitched whine coming from my truck. It seems to be coming from the passengers side seat area. It doesnt happen all the time. I seem to only notice it when my wife rides with me.

I notice this on mine too...seems to happen when it is pretty cold out and then goes away after I drive it a little ways and it warms up a bit. Seems like it comes from the engin area. ?????? Happens right before it shifts seems like.

No, this is different. Mine is distinct pitch, with a timbre almost like that of a tuning fork held to your ear. It is very noticeable. It pops up between 45 and 55, then almost disappears until it returns between 68 and 75. It is only present under positive throttle, or load on the drivetrain. Once I let off the throttle it disappears entirely.

It isn't bad enough to get upset about, but it does seem to be getting worse. For instance, it wasn't present at zero miles, but started appearing at around 1000 miles at the lower speeds, and around 5k miles at the higher speeds. I believe it is getting louder. I think it is indicative of an improperly set up differential.

A few years ago I bought a shaft-drive motorcycle that had a bad whine in the final drive. When the regional rep brought a new final drive for me, he confided that there'd been a batch of poorly setup finals come out of the factory in Japan, the result of a defective SPL meter used on a bench to test for noise.

Just a little levity to offset the seriousness. I do hope you all find the fix for your noises though.

I have had this high pitched whine happen a few cold mornings on my truck too, and when I was trying to explain it to a friend, I had mentioned it being similar to a tuning fork also. Sounds like a high pitched vibration to me, from the engine or front area.

I would like to take it in to find out what it is, but cant duplicate it on demand.

mine is just like the original post. I have a whine b/w 1500 and 2000 rpms...and it is definitely engine related as i can hear it just over my tranny in what sounds like the dash. At first I thought it was coming through my speakers via a shorted ground of some sort. Now I dont know what it is...and I havent found anyone that can answer the question.

Mine is a steady whine, seems like it's coming from the back. Stead at 45 mph, any higher or lower it's gone. When putting it into neutral, it's still there. They tell me it's the ring and pinion. It went into the shop this morning. We'll see.
