Ford Bug Deflector And Hood Vibration
Ford Bug Deflector And Hood Vibration
I ran a quick search and it brought back 52 posts that dealt with this, but none of them answered my couple of questions...
1. For those of you who have installed (or had Ford install) the Ford bugshield, are you still noticing vibration?
2. Is this with the HIGH profile, or the LOW profile?
3. If there is a vibration, what have you done to fix it (short of removing it)?
Thanks in advance.

I have the High profile on my truck and have had no vibration problems. The vibration has to come from the way the deflector is installed since you have to sandwich it in between the grill and you have to use the little clips on the outboard "wings." The instructions that come with the kit are really poor. Ford gave us a picture set of instructions because I think that they feel that we p/u trucks people are unable to read. But their pictures suck. Before you throw out the Ford deflector, the mounting should be checked.

Sorry...but I also tried to see if they at least had clear available when I ordered mine - it was a "no go". I had the same problem when I wanted to get a clear deflector to have it custom painted for my wife's Windstar...no clear ones from Ford. I ended getting one from AutoVentshade which actually turned out to be pretty good.
I was just double checking at http://www.fordaccessoriesstore.com , which has pictures of both the "high profile" and "low profile" deflectors. They look the same to me. I just checked the instructions that came with mine and they have both Part #s listed, so I'm really not sure which one mine is. It doesn't seem "high profile", but then, to me, neither does the pic of the high profile shield.

I've had the Ford High profile bug deflector for 3 months. I installed it myself. Before I read any post about this, I had never noticed any vibration. Since first reading about it on this forum, I have specifically looked for any kind of vibration or movement in my hood at various highway speeds. I have yet to observe any unusual movement even when I 'm looking for it. As far as increased wind noise it's hard to say whether it's louder or not since I put the bug shield on very shortly after purchasing the truck and I don't remember if was quieter without it.

If you have any vibration, you will find that it is the back of the hood that raises up and down. This tells me that the aerodynamics of the air flow have changed enough to cause the problem.
Why some do it and others do not with the same brand of deflector, I do not know.
