STX gets engine surgery for a Supercharger...

Our STX is to be shipped to our tuning partner, DYNOCOMP in Scottsdale AZ for a supercharger upgrade.

After numerous hours of research, we decided that we will be using a twin-screw, top mount blower unit (similar to the picture below) that sits on the intake manifold, for better torque gains. Our software will be completely custom and adjusted as the truck in on a dyno.

Expected gains: 95 ft-lbs of torque, 88 horsepower on the wheels

Progress and more information coming soon.

it's nice to have folks like red04 on the forum who want to mess around and spend loads of money on their trucks. it's fun to watch, but i could never afford it all (or any of it for that matter).

Anybody know if intercoolers are available yet? From what I read they make the engine last longer in addition to the power gains. Be nice to purchase something that will make it last longer.

First, anyone that installs a blower on an engine without an intercooler is probably incompetent.

We are also working with SPEARCO to develop a front-mount intercooler unit for this project.

Had no idea intercoolers and turbochargers go hand in hand. Shows how much I know about them. hehe Do you know how much the intercooler is going to run? Is it true what I have read that it will extend the life of the engine?

In very general terms...

The concept of a supercharger and a turbo can be simulated by an air compressor, like the ones you use to inflate your tires.

The harder (more psi or boost) you compress the air, the hotter it becomes (try touching your air compressor motor). Cooling, as accomplished by an intercooler unit, brings down the compressed air temperature.

Any engine functions better and provides better horsepower when cooler air is ingested for combustion (hence the concept of the COLD AIR INTAKES).

As for engine life, my personal concept is this... just like humans, they can do an "X" amount of work in a day; but if you do "X plus one" then you end up more strained or stressed at the end of the day.

Just me.

Isn't that a picture of a heat exchanger and not an intercooler ?

Heat Exchanger = Intercooler = same.

That's a picture of a Spearco product.

Nope. Heat exchanger mounts in a prominent place in the front of the vehicle, usually behind the front bumper to remove the heat that the intercooler picks up from the intake charge. The intercooler usually sits below the supercharger and cools the intake air charge before entering the combustion chamber. They are 2 separate parts.

Most tuners now use the term intercooler (air-to-air, or air-to-water) for both functions as the heat exchanger is a confusing term. Both systems accomplish the same function which is to cool down the passing air through the cooling radiators.

Nevertheless, I think its the opposite. The heat exchanger sits in the intake plenum (post-charge) while the intercooler sits behind the front bumper (pre-charge).

My question is it should be made easy to work other than the tuning issues with the variable cam timing. I like to see the data loogging on the tuning.

Mercedes Benz, AMG, KLEEMANN, RENNTECH, and other major tuners in Europe and in the US for high end European cars uses that terminology and concept accordingly.

We actually have one on an E500 that produces around 500 ft-lbs of torque from a 5.0-liter Mercedes Benz engine.

Here's the picture of the twin-screw S/C covered by the carbon fiber intake box...

and the Autoweek Article about the same car..

Intercooler and heat exchanger are 2 separate parts. I'm done here, good day.
