cat back vs muffler only - Noise?

Hi

I'm sold on a cat-back for the performance gains, but I'm a little concerned that when I put an intake on as well, my truck will be too loud. I nice rumble and a little roar is great when I step on it, but I don't want it to sound like bigfoot when I roll into the parking lot at work.

How much louder (if at all) is a cat-back system compared to muffler only? I think the Magnaflow cat-back has pipes that are the same diameter as stock, but I'm not sure which muffler they sell with the kit and how loud it is, or how the piping might otherwise affect the sound. Any feedback would be great.

I put a 40 series flowmaster (2-pass) on my 2004 F150 XLT Supercab 4.6. (muffler only), if i had to do it again, i would have gone the 3-pass route.
It does sound great on the outside, deep throaty sound and not to loud, the problem i have is its alittle to loud inside the cab.
If i hold 40 mph, i can hear a basey type sound inside the cab that at times bothers me.

I had the Magnaflow 1-in/2-out dual rear exit cat-back system with a K&N FIPK on my '97 5.4 Scab. Under hard acceleration, the FIPK was louder inside the cab than the exhaust. At freeway speeds, neither were audible. Magnaflows are well known for their rather subdued sound, especially considering they're straight through designs. At idle, they're nearly silent, but when you get on 'em they offer a mellow sound similar to glasspacks (Magnaflows are packed with rock wool)...not rumbling or raucus or 'ricer' sounding.

When installing, talk to your installer about the sound you want. Usually the installer will fit a muffler to fill the OEM space (huge on the '04), but he will likely have several lengths in stock and will fit to your desire...shorter=louder, longer=quieter.

Funny I work for a computer company and dont have a computer
at home so I cant do that. However I see that you are in Tosa and I work in Menomonee Falls so if you want to hear it once I get the exhaust on depending on what side of Tosa your on I would be happy to meet you and you can hear it in person. If your on the north side it's only about ten minutes or so from me.

I have a Gibson cat back Swept Side system. It is not loud, just a nice little rumble and nice sound when you get on it. Should be no problem for a person looking for a fairly quiet system.
