Max payload question

Ok, the book says the max payload for a F-150 4x4 with 6.5' bed is 1,650 pounds. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's over 3/4 ton. So why is the F-150 considered a 1/2 ton pickup? Maybe they just increased it's capability, but everyone still thinks of it as a 1/2 ton pickup?

1650 is not the higest payload.
I have seen 2wd with more than 1700 lbs.
I don't think ford uses 1/2 ton 3/4 ton 1 ton anymore.

The distinction hails from a time when Ford made the F-100, which was a true 1/2 ton pickup truck, and the F-150 was a true 3/4 ton truck. Obviously, the numbers to the right of the F refer to maximum payload capacity (as they do for Dodge and Chevy, ex: the Ram 1500). People referred to the smaller truck (the F-100) as the 1/2 ton, and the larger truck as 3/4 ton. These distinctions carried over when all manufacturers ceased making the 1000 pound trucks (mainly because of the creation of the compact truck, namely the Ranger and the S-10). The distinctions, I guess, just carried over from an older time.

I guess it doesnt matter either way.....

Alrighty, thanks. I know the max payload is higher if you get the payload package. I was just curious about my model. So I guess it's safe to tell people I have a 3/4 ton truck (when I actually get it!)

I thought I had read or seen somewhere that the truck could haul 3000 lbs in the bed.

The heavier frame and wider leaf spring should be able to carry more weight than previous models.

The Regular Cab with 144" wheelbase will, indeed, carry 3000 lbs.

The Ford Ranger carries over 1,000 lbs.

Trucks are much tougher than ih the 50's and 60's, but it would be confusing to change thier designations ( 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 ton) every year.

"Now!! New for 2005!!! Ford F-150 0.875 Ton Truck!!! Better than last year's 0.863 Ton Model"

We just kept the old designations. But yes, your truck will haul closer to 1 ton than 1/2 ton. It's "Ford Tough".

Yea, this is a system for the days of old. No, you really shouldn't say you have a 3/4 ton truck. That would be mis-leading.

F150
Dodge 1500
Chevy Silverado
Nissan Titan

All 1/2 ton

F250
Dodge 2500
Chevy HD

3/4 ton

We always called dualy's "1 tons"
