Question Poor Wiper Design?

Is it me or do the windshield wipers not do a very good job of clearing the drivers side of the window. I get 3-4 inches of window vertically that is not clear which is really annoying in the snowy weather. I never noticed this on my 98. Any thoughts to a solution to clear this part of the window?
I also notice the wipers themselves are not very good in the snow they freeze up alot even with the defroster cranking.

Put on winter blades and in an earlier thread someone removed the arm and bent it so it would wipe further to the left. It was also stated that the arm is not adjustable, it only installs one way, thats why they resorted to bending the arm.

You know, it's really a shame to have to resort to things like "bending the arm" to make something as simple as wipers work properly!

I agree, the blade seems to not work too well. I know that I will be asking for a replacement set of blades on my first visit.

Here's my issue...After the water has been wiped and the drivers side blade is moving down (or left to right), the water 'jumps' over the blade and remains on the windshield right in my field of view. It only happens on the drivers side. Just a little frustrating. The wiper itself cleans fine for me, just as any new wiper would, however I haven't had it in snow. My '99 didn't have this problem.

I agree with this. I get a patch about 3-4inches wide right at eye level. If anyone has more specific istructions on the "bending fix" please post. I don't want to start bending stuff at random.

I noticed this the first time it rained. I also noticed that the left and right wiper had different degree of bends so I swapped them and gained about 1" of sweep on the driver's side. It would have been better to make them adjustable instead of "Bendable".

wiper blade arm fix

Has anyone experienced a problem with the wipers not going far enough to the left on the drivers side. They leave between 4 - 5 inches of untouched window. When the wipers were in the park position the drivers side was actually tilted at an angle to far towards the hood cowl. I thought it was a matter of adjustment. The dealer said there is no adjustment like the old spline system. I took it upon myself to correct the problem. I removed the arm (easy to do with the clip Ford uses to hold it on) I then proceeded to bend the arm (yes bend the arm) to correct the angle. The blades work just good as they did from the factory but now they go further to the left and have a better appearance and fit angle when in the park position. Because it is a trial and error method I only had to remove the blade arm twice. Easy fix. I trust myself more than I do the dealer tec guys because it is my truck.

Good luck if you want better visibility and a nicer looking fit in the park position.

Please Don't Bend your wiper arm

That isn't the correct way to fix this issue, I found an article that says own to remove the key in the wipe arm to allow it to be relocated. Let me go find it and I will post it here in just a few.

Here is what I found:

"After closer inspection, it appeared that the key was press fit into (not cast as part of) the wiper arm mounting hub....meaning that it could probably be removed. I carefully mounted the hub of the wiper arm hub in the padded, rubber jaws of my bench vise with the hub opening (part that fits on the drive shaft) facing upwards. NOTE: Tighten the vise ONLY enough to GENTLY hold the wiper arm....or you will bend it out of round!!

Then I took a small awl (or punch) and put it on top of the key, angled toward the center of the hub.....and lightly tapped the awl with a SMALL tack hammer, and the key moved in towards the center of hub. Then I took a pair of needle nose pliers and removed the key with little effort.

With the key removed, you can now position the wiper arm ANY way you want. I re-mounted mine so that in the park position, the wiper stops at about the Ford glass logo at the bottom center of the windshield.....which allows it to sweep the windshield to about 1 - 1.5" from the far left edge of the glass.....which is a HUGE improvement " Posted by FANMAN2
