04 Rear End Noise
04 Rear End Noise
Took my 04 FX4 with 2800 miles back to the dealer this morning to repair a rather loud noise that changed pitch with speed differences. Almost a squeel at high speeds, and a low grinding noise when decelerating to a stop. After about 6 hours, a new differential carrier assembly, and new pinion bearings, everything is quiet as it should be. They also gave me a free oil and filter change.
I have not noticed many posts about 04 F150's and differeintial problems, so I hope mine was an isolated case.

Mine has two howls. One happens between 48 and 52 mph on positive throttle. It goes away on negative throttle.
The other one happens between 68 and 72 mph, and isn't much affected by throttle one way or the other (could be tires, I suppose).
I had the selling dealer look at it for this problem last week. They concluded that this is normal noise for this truck. I'm not terribly bothered by the noise, except that the only two vehicles I've ever had that gave a differential noise were both Ford trucks, this one and my last 03 XLT. The XLT spent four days in the shop while they chased that noise. They replaced the driveshaft, and also opened the diff to check its setup. According to the service manager at that dealership, Ford has a bulletin about this noise, and that is what they were using as a reference to chase my noise. The howl on my 03 was much worse than what I get on my Screw, and in spite of the four days in the shop, they weren't able to eliminate, or even change, the noise.
Mainly I wanted to go on record as having lodged a service complaint about differential noise. If it gets worse, or the diff develops a functional problem after warranty expires, I will have something to stand on with regard to that. It has always been my experience that noises that signal real problems will get worse in time. As of now, it is only a mild howl in a narrow rpm range, easily ignored.
