Which Truck

I had a friend of a friend call the other day and ask to buy my 2002 Ford FX4 Lariat Supercrew 4x4. I told him I wasn't really interested but he insisted so I gave a him a price. Low and behold he took it, so now I need a new truck.

I have my new truck narrowed down to two. It's either a 2004 Ford FX4 Lariat Supercrew 4x4 or a 2004 Lariat FX4 250 diesel Supercab 4x4. I really like the 250 but I have never owned a diesel before. In addition, this thing is about 2 foot longer than my current truck so I don't know if it's going to be too big. I'm a home builder and do quite a bit of in town driving. The dealer going to give me one to drive tomorrow so I will get to try it for a day or so before making a decision.

I know this is the place for thoughts and opinions so throw them at me.

Moderstor - if this is the wrong forum for this question, olease move. Thanks

i think if you had enough room in the 02 screw, then the new 04 screw will do fine. if you found yourself needing room in the old screw (esp in the bed) get the 250. the 150 will have more toys on it though... but the 250 has the diesel option..... tough call. but when i worked for ford in '00 i drove the 00 screw vs the ext cab 250 back to back, and the 250 is a beast to park in tight spots compared to the 150. turning radius sucks on the SD series

Best advice I can think of is drive both.

If you live in a cold climate, consider that you'll have to plug it in if you go with the Powerstroke.

The 5.4 300 hp motor so far I really like. Last mileage was over 15.

The Powerstrokes do quite well on fuel, over 21 mpg highway is not unusual and they have boatloads of torque.

horkn,

Parking is one of the things I'm worried about. Do you think it's any worse than my wife's Yukon XL.

If you can get by on the F250 "Supercab", why not get the 2004 F150 Supercab? Seating is much better than the 250.

Also, on the 2004 F150 you will have to get FX4 or Lariat.

FX4 is now a trim level.

I had a 99 F350 Super Duty V10, traded it for a 04 F150 5.4. The 04 is a lot nicer truck, turns better, more power, rides a hell of a lot better, parks a lot easier. No question in my mind, go for the F150.

The 2004 F-150 is a very nice truck- no doubt, but I think you'd really like the 250- especially if you don't live in a super-cold climate. (Buffalo, North Dakota, Montana, etc..) If it (2004 F-150) handles better than my 2003 Expy EB- then the 2004 is one hell of a great handling truck. (I say if, because I haven't really put one through it's paces, yet.) I've seen the interior, and like the Black & silver accents of the FX4 Screw far better than the wood in the Lariat- if you see both you'll see what I'm saying.

While the 250 won't be as nice on the inside, if you get the Lariat Crewcab you won't miss much from the 150. Then- there's always the F-250 King-Ranch option.

Before I got my 03 Expy two months ago, I drove an F-250 Lariat with the new diesel in it. It was by far the quietest diesel I've ever driven. The Power was great- and I hear the mileage is better on diesels than on gas engines. I drove HUMMER's for 10 years in the Army, so I'm not used to refined, fuel efficient diesels. It was in my opinion, quite a step up over the old 7.3L in quietness. Not nearly as clankity. (Check the 250 forum, people have had problems with the new 6.0's suddenly losing power... Probably fixed by Ford by now.)

My next door neighbor bought one Saturday (F-250 Crew-cab Lariat)- already has a lift-kit on it (Which normally I hate, but looks darn good on his truck). He got the Dark-Grey, Crew Cab Lariat with the wind-deflectors, and they tinted the windows. Great looking truck that will look that much better when he rids himself of those girly-man factory tires.....

You won't have any trouble parking the 250. People say the same thing about the Excursion, and it was only 2" longer than a 2003 F-150 Super Crew. The Crewcab 250 is 21" longer, than a SupreCrew, so it may not fit in your garage. My neighbor has his outside....

The 250's not THAT big, and if you've already driven, and can handle trucks, the 250 will be no problem. Take the same precautions with it that you do in your F-150.

My wife loves the new F-150, I kinda do too after seeing that FX4 back in Oct., but- if I have my way, if she gets another truck, it'll be the F-250 Lariat (For me) and she'll take my Expedition.

FYI

I've heard rumors that the 250 is up for a new body style in the next year or so... just so you know

By the way... I L-O-V-E my new F150... Every one I talk to (including competor's loyals) say my truck is the best looking truck they've seen in a while.

Black FX4SCrew w/18'' rims.

maybe it is only 2" longer.... but i am talking manueverability. anybody have the turning radius figures for both trucks so we can put this to bed? i know for a fact that a crew 250 even a shortbed has a way bigger turning radius than even an old 03 150 screw. and the 04 turns even sharper.....

I don't doubt the F-150 can turn sharper...
I'm just saying parking it won't be that big of a deal.

Now, if you're trying to drive through Taco Bell's tight **** drive-throughs, yes.... that may be a problem- or parking in a mutli-floor garage.

I was in New Orleans over Thanksgiving, and the hotel parking lots were elevated, with some pretty tight spots, from my Expy's view point. But, we made it with room to spare. Expy has an excellent turning radius.

Later that evening we came out and I saw Suburbans and Excursions in the same lot, on lower levels. So, what I'm saying is- once you get used to it- parking will not be a problem.

Side Note: I'm seeing more & more Heavy Duties with the rear sensing system. May not be a bad option to check. It came on my Expy, and has proven quite useful.

Here is where I'm at. I spent 1/2 the day driving one and it looks like I'm going with the 2004 FX4 Lariat 250 Crew Cab with the 6.0 Powerstroke engine. It's a big change from my F150 but I like it and it's a hell of a beast.

As for the money, thus far I've got the dealer down to about $1,000 under invoice plus a bedliner. I think I can do a little better so I havn't made the deal yet.

What do you think?

The truck I'm looking at is Dark Torredor Red with an Arizona Biege bottom. What's interesting is that it has a King Ranch steering wheel, light tan leather with dark leather top and bottom. I need to give a good once over again and see if there is anything else.

If I keep talking like this it's probably time to move to the 250SD Forum
