Undercoating /Rust Proofing
Any of you guys in snow and ice country , looked into some kind of rust proffing like Ziebart ?? The Salt and Chemicals they put on the roads aren't nice to the underside for sure . My 97 was dealer undercoated at it still looked real good . So I was thinking about having the Lariat done . Anybody do any price shopping ? I just want this to truck to look as good as it does for as long as Possible .
I had mine done at the dealer, undercoating, teflon paint sealant and scotchgaurd. All 3 for $699. It has a 10 year warranty an any surface rust or paint etching (from acid rain bird dung etc) I live in Minnesota and its worth it.
I had my SCrew done for $599, included initial wash (looked pretty bad), paint seal, scotchguard, leather protection, undercoating, rust protection (no holes were drilled, they used some kind of snorkels) and it even included 5 free buff & shines to be used at any time, Ann Arbor, MI
undercoating insurance
i bought my 1993 f150 from the dealer and had the undercoating applied,, the company that warranties this rustproofing is called ACP out of illinois,, it was a worth while investment, ($600) as i made 2 claims the 9th and 10th year of the warranty for some minor rust on the cab,, total repair for the claims was $1800 in body work,,ACP never said a word and sent the checks out both times i claimed the rust damage,, the second time i made a claim they did send out a investigator though to the house to look at the truck,, he took pics of the rust and wanted the name of the dealer i had it rustproofed at,,said ACP wanted to talk to them about their rustproofing procedures to make them do a better job,, this company is A1 in service and makes fileing a claim very easy if you have to,,,john, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (ps, the only rust after 10 years of wisconsin winters and salt was a spot behind the drivers side cab and the same side rocker panel, traded her in for a new xlt 2004 f150, dealer could not believe her condition after 10 years)

ok, let me preface this with-DON'T TAKE IT PERSONAL.
Now then, let me share that I dated (for a long time) Jenny Marshall daughter of Ziebart creator/owner Dave Marshall. He often would share with me that his business of rust proofing is no longer a needed product for newer vehicles as Mfg's have upgraded the building process. He specifically states that through better raw materials, paint and engineering, Mfg's are extending the life of sheet metal. Hence this is why they do so many other things now like bed-liners, detailing, running boards, etc..

I have a friend that bought a new vehicle in 1988.
He is one of the most meticulate people I know and takes care of his vehicles like I do (hand wash, serious blow out of crap from underside, wheel lips, underside of bumper, etc..)
Last year my oldest approached driving age and we started looking for a good vehicle for him that HE could afford.
After looking at pretty much junk for several weeks trying to find something within his price range, I pretty much gave up.
On a whim, I called my friend and asked if he'd be interested in sellin the '88. He didn't need the money and wasn't selling it, but as a friend said sure. Original owner, all receipts, friend - the type of purchase we all love.
The only problem with the vehicle was the right side front fender was starting to rust out. The vehicle was never wrecked or abused and rarely saw dirt roads.
Well, I bought a new fender and had the paint mixed and everything in preparation to fix the truck, and my kid had a guy pull out in front of him at 45 mph. Truck was totalled.
Below is what I pulled out of the fender where the rust was... It was a $900 dealer rust and body treatment (I still have the original dealer paperwork). It weighs about 4 lbs. and feels like hardened silicone.
I don't believe in these treatments, never have never will, and if you listen to the manufacturers, they'll tell you they often cause more problems than they prevent.

wrong price on rustproofing
gave the wrong price on ecp rustproofing from dealer,, was $300,, i agree with the above photo,, some dealers don't know how to apply the product,, they just stuff it in,, but for $300 and a 10 year protection, (which is as long as i keep my vehicle) and claiming $1800 in repairs i thought this was a great insurance,, plus no additional yearly touch up money
NOTE:my body man looked at my new truck,, said the biggest problem he could see was on the inside bottom doors , known this guy for 20 years and he knows his stuff,, said where the metal wraps up on the inside of the bottom of the door will be the first place this truck will rust,, he is a firm believer in oil as a protection as he has ripped apart rusted cars/trucks and seen where spilled oil has saved parts of the vehicle from rust,, he had me use a penetrating oil and fill the bottom of the door seams with small tube attached to can of penetrating oil till they appeared full,,said this was only protection from salt as the spray in protection from dealer would never get there,, just some more in put guys,,jpmpd

The stuff that Ziebart uses starts out as a carmel colored thin oil....after sitting for about 4 hrs it turns to a brown thick grease and remains that way for "life". They actually drilled small injection holes in some of the lower body sections (Door jambs) and capped them with small plugs....can't see any of the holes/caps when the doors are closed. They hit all innner body panel surfaces from the windows down. I've used them before and have been VERY satisfied. Like I said earlier, they warranty the WORK for life and actually give you a certificate that states such...and is honored by all Ziebarts (even though they are franchised). Thats piece of mind enough for me to spend 350.00. I could think of alot worse ways to spend that money.
