Questions about ordering process ... first time ...

Greetings ....

My '01 Expy lease is up in May, and I have decided to get an '04 F150 4x4 Lariat ....

Dealer does not have the truck I want in stock and can't seem to locate one, so I was thinking of ordering one and have the following questions:

1. What is the general process? I assume the salesperson keys the order in to a copmuter system and it spits out some VIN or order number, right?

2. Are the options keyed by name or product number? Should I get this info beforehand to faciliatate the process or is the computer system smart enoough to match trim level with correct options, etc?

2. Do they usually want a large deposit? (I will negotiate this with the dealer, but it helps to know what they usually want).

3. What is the normal lead time?

4. What recourse do I have (if any) if the screw up the ordering and the truck arrives w/out options ordered, etc?

Any other pitfalls or comments would be most appreciated.

Thank you .....

(BTW I will be ordering a Lariat 4x4 SuperCrew in Torreador Red with Arizona Beige two-tone with all options with a black interior ...)

this thread is extremely useful for understanding the ordering process. read it and you will know more than the sales people I've found.

1. Read the thread noted above.

2. Yes, they use codes for each option. Go to www.kbb.com and price your truck as you want it and print that and bring it with you.

2. (You have two '2's but that's ok) Some want a deposit, some don't. Usually if they want one it is about $500.

3. Lead time from order to delivery at your dealer can be anywhere from 6-10 weeks. No one can predict it.

4. You can get your deposit back and walk away. That's what I did. I found one on a lot that I liked better after placing my order. It's no problem. If they screw up, it's not your problem until you sign the papers. Check the truck out thoroughly before you take delivery of the vehicle and you'll be fine.

You will love this truck. It is worth the wait.

one more thing, order the reverse sensing system and the tow package. they are worth every penny.

(1) The salesperson keys in the vehicle/options by Order Code, prints a confirmation order for your inspection, keys F4 to submit order if OK.

(2) It will facilitate the process if you know exactly what you want. The computer will screen for compatibility. You can 'build' your truck (options and MSRP/invoice price) on line prior to your dealer visit.

(2) (sic) A deposit is not required.

(3) Vehicle will arrive in 4-8 weeks, usually depending on factory holds for some items, e. g. 2 tone paint, etc. I know of 3 week deliveries (shortest) to 8 week (longest). After holidays, expect 4-6 wks.

(4) you don't take delivery unless you're satisfied.

See the Fleet Mgr. for best negotiated price...often invoice or in range of $300 above or below invoice. Why pay a salesperson's commission?
