04 SCrew Bed Covers

I have had my 04 FX Screw for a month and have been looking for the best looking, most functional, most waterproof cover for the bed. I ordered a "Fold A Cover" ($635) and found there are installation issues and will return it. I've found the "Roll N Lock" and the "Retrax". Does anyone a specific experience with either, or have other suggestions for an owner who doesn't like the hard covers.

t. rush,

Welcome! You can usually get lots of information by using the "search" feature. Here are some relatively recent threads pertaining to Retrax and/or Roll N Lock:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...hreadid=131161

I've got a Retrax on my SCrew and am happy with it.

Good luck.

I saw the Access roll up (soft cover) in person Friday afternoon on a white screw. WOW Looks amazing. I'm going to get it. Now I have to decide what comes 1st. The bed cover or the grille guard and tail light guards. Oh decisions decisions.

JohnAndDar, Retrax

Hey, tks for your response re Retrax. How about installation: the fold a cover and the roll n lock both appear to require some drilling - right, on a 30K+ vehicle! Did you install it and does it "simply" clamp in; how about degree of difficulty? It appears to have somewhat of a sheen in pics, does it? And finally, just how waterproof is it and what should I expect to pay? You can post a reply, and/or email me at t.rush@comcast.net Thanks

The Retrax is all clamp-on. The only drilling that needs to be done is where the canister drains out through the 2 oval plastic inserts on the back of the bed. There are 2 clear plastic tubes that are approx. 1/2 -3/4" diameter that attach to brass fiitings on the underside of the canister.

This cover has great function, but the custom look is even more impressive!

It takes about 2 hours to install, and the directions are good.

Good Luck!!!

t. rush,

I ditto everything fatboy0103 said regarding installation. I'd recommend you have another set of hands helping you, just to make sure that it doesn't getted dropped or scratched, especially when you place it in the bed. If you have a drop-in bedliner you may or not have to do some trimming of the bedliner.

It does have a shiny surface...because it is Lexan...and it can be treated with wax/sealant, which should help to retain that "new" look.

So far, my Retrax has been waterproof. I have no reason to believe it won't stay that way.

I ordered mine direct from Retrax. It cost $889 + $48 shipping. If you review the 3rd thread link I posted above, you'll see that redstorm got a better deal through someone else who is a forum member. You may want to check that out. (I wish I did, I'm sure I could have found something else to buy for the truck with the money saved ).

fatboy0103,

Lock cover? I don't recall seeing that on the Retrax website.
How well does it work? Can you post a pic? It sounds like that's what I need.

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

Retax said it is on back-order. I need it though. We have had snow and ice for 2 weekends straight. When you open the lock when it is snowing or has snowed, it becomes very difficult to close it. The spring loaded lock will not catch if there is the slightest piece of debris (snow, ice, slush) in the well of the lock. I'm not sure the Lock Cover will protect agaist this problem though. It might just protect the key slot from the elements.

Also, I don't particularly like the way the pins come out to hold the cover in place on the rail system. It works, but it puts indents in the rails. They should have used some sort of clamping mechanism.

The locking mechanism is my only gripe with the system, and I wouldn't buy any other. Im quite pleased with the look, fit, finish and functionality of the cover itself.

I just recently looked at this on ebay. (http://www.truck-auto-accessory.com) They run $295 for the buy it now price. They seem to be well made but then again it is a picture. I like option of folding part of it over but I am not sure about the vinyl wear.

Retrax lock cover

I went ahead an emailed Retrax about the lock cover this morning and this was their reply:

Hello John,

We do have a new lock cover coming out in 2-3 weeks.
We do not have any remaining covers from our older design.
If you wanted to get one ordered, please give us a call
800-206-4070. Price is $9.50 plus $.60 postage.

Thank you
Randy @ RETRAX

This is exactly what I need, because of the problems I've had with water settling in the handle and freezing. I'm going to call them back today. redstorm - I hope you see this, too.

fatboy0103, I hadn't notice that the handle "stop" pins were making indents in the rails...I'll have to check that out when my truck is thawed out...

I just purchased the Retrax and went through all the questions you did. I bet I looked at every post, regarding the Retrax, on the entire web. Never saw a negative comment about it. My main concern was how waterproof it is. All seem confident that it is nearly 100% waterproof minus a few drops here and there.
I also ordered mine from JDMNAR. The best price going and a member of F150 online.

It's great! I will also get it.

BTW, I got the reply from retrax as follows.

Hello

We will send out a replacement lock out today.
I you have any question on installing or adjusting it please give me a call.

Thank you,
Randy

They are very professional and quick in service, can't get better. Today I also bought the graphite and will try that for the key hole, and try wd spray for the hundle. will tell you all what happenes.

This morning at 6am I had to finght the 12 inches of snow on my truck that was covered with califonia car cover. I am so used to getting on the tonneau cover as I used to have the hard cover on my chevy and I forgot that I had the retrax this time that is not so rigid. As I got off the cover and took my cover off I was worried if I did anything but it was all fine.

I have been trying to take many more pics of my truck and mods but.....welcome to downeast, right? Snow, Raine, Winds, and yes, long hours work.... but hey, I will have my day.

Very Happy Retrax Owner.
