JMorri,

Most dealers would treat the AQHA as any other rebate and apply it to reduce the selling price at time of purchase.
I think that most dealers would be concerned about the pressing the 30 day rule for the AQHA rebate because they are always subject to audits by Ford, and if they are found to have not met the requirements for rebate programs, they are subject to chargeback from Ford (or worse, if a pattern of abuse is found).
My dealer was very up front that they would be happy to process the rebate for me, but only if I definitely had the AQHA membership for the 30 day requirement. I ordered my truck and it came in sooner than I expected. I actually held off taking delivery by a day just to make sure I met the 30 day requirement.
Maybe your dealer says they'll send you a check because they know it's "iffy" and want to make sure that Ford doesn't have any problems with it before they front you the $500?

Good luck.
