Changing Oil.... Drip Tray

Has anyone changed their own oil? If so, did you use a drip tray to keep oil from running all down the cross member and rack & pinion?

Thanks

I changed my oil last week. Didn't use anything under the filter, so oil did run all over. My old 150 5.4 had a nice little sheetmetal guide under the filter to direct the oil into one place, but not so on this new 5.4. I believe that, next time, I'll use a baby diaper under the filter to absorb the oil that comes out of it. I use this method on my little Miata, and it works pretty well, keeps things cleaner under there.

My 4x2 Supercrew has a plastic drip tray that kept oil off the crossmember and rack. The oil filter is not easy to remove-poor access to get a wrench on .

The first gush of oil from the filter when loosened drops straight down into the pan (if y'all use one). The oil cleanly missed the cross member...the rack and pinion is far forward of the filter. However, I really miss the ease of changing the filter on my '97 F250 (LD) 5.4...it was located in the driver's side wheelwell just ahead of the tire. Really neat...could change the filter without having to crawl under the truck.

Mine also has a plastic drip tray and a hole in the skid plate that the oil drops straight through.

2004 Screw 4x4 with tow package

On these models, where do they locate the oil filter? I too love the ease of changing the filter on my 98 F150, it is nicely tucked inside the front bumper.

My CrownVic is not as easy.

The oil filter on the '04 F150 5.4L is located on the lower left corner of the engine just below the camshaft pulley...it's angled slightly toward the passenger side fog lamp...a little tough to get a wrench on or align the filter to the gasket facing.
