Door Chime location?

Went looking for the door ajar chime and short of dismantling my dash, I can't find it. I disconnected some likely looking candidates but to no avail.

Anyone know where it is and/or what it takes to get to it?
Thanks.

PS, if your curious, I like to have the radio on while detailing, bs'ing, etc, and if the door is open that chime drives me nuts. I'm not worried about locking keys in car and headlights are on automatic.

If its anything like previous designs, its coming from the GEM module which means you can't turn off the chime.

I haven't seen the new 04's but try the old chime trick, pull the key thing out and tape off the tab.

Thanks, yeah I read that but not sure I want to take the column apart, and not sure if it would affect the SecuriLock feature or not.

Thanks for the heads up that it might not be possible.

Dang, was easy as pie on my '93 Ranger, just unplug the thing that made the noise.

is there a hole in the bottom of the cover near the key? My guess is it will come right out. No need to take the covers off.

If you're talking about the hole with a rubber stopper, that's the place to bypass the shift lock should something happed. Lets you shift out of park without depressing the brake peddle.

Hard to see in there if the tumbler hole release is in there also.
I'll look again tomorrow and study the plastic column cover, I looked at first like it was heat welded.

Door Chime

I have a 2004 Supercrew and succesfully disconnected the chime. That thing drove me nuts. I pulled off the lower shroud around the steering column (one screw) and removed the lower dash panel in order to pull the lower shroud out. The shroud is not easy to pull loose because it actually has a flange that sticks into the steering wheel. I found the wire coming off of the ignition switch that was hot when the key was inserted. There are about seven wires, some are big. This wire is small and it is one of three small wires. I think it is brown with a stripe, but anyway take a test light or multi meter and check. I cut the wire, but left enough that I can reconnect if needed. I have not had any problems with anything else not working and it has been two days. I assume the feature that won't allow you to lock your keys in your truck will not work anymore. I have keypad entry so I don't care.

Good luck
Kevin

Kevin, still nothing out of the ordinary after cutting that wire?

I pulled off the shrouds tonight but haven't tested with a multimeter yet, I was still looking for the actual thing that dinged, danged if I can find it (must be integrated into one of the plastic boxes.

Will test tomorrow...makes me nervous messing around under there with an explosive device so close

Good news Bad news

Good news is I've located the dinger. Bad news is that it's on the PC board with the rest of the dash instruments (speedo, tach, temp etc...).

I decided it was best not to pull this out and instead stop disassembly of the dash at this point

So, getting to the wire Kevin pointed out is the best solution, I'm still wary of side affects though.

If you wanna know how to take the dash apart, I'm your man

Doesn't the dinger stop if you turn the key to the on position?

Might be easier to trick the truck into thinking the door is closed instead of no key in ignition.

Tricking it into thinking the doors are always closed would disable a lot of features, most notibly, the accessories and radio still run after the key is removed up to 10 min or when a door is opened...you get the idea.

I was thinking of a switch of some sort. Not permanent.

I would actually like the windows & radio to work for the whole 10 minutes rather than turn off when door opens.

Thanks Kevingab, I'm not sure I would have removed that wire if someone else hadn't done it first

That lower steering wheel column shroud is a real B!TCH to remove and reinstall.

I opted to remove the wire/pin from the connector, that way I can just push it back in if needed. To do this I popped off the red connector cover and inserted a jeweler's screwdriver to lift the pin lock, then pull the wire out. I insulated the pin with shrink tubing. (WARNING: disconnect the ground from your battery before doing this)

Here's some pics I took:

While I was "down there" I insulated the turn signal clicker with some foam rubber and zip tied it further back under the dash...sounded like a blacksmith under there before.

The payoff...SILENCE

Hrm, when I turn my key enough to have the radio on (like when detailing, et cetera), yet not enough to crank the engine... it chimes about 10 times and then gives a 2 second "beep" and stops...

I can deal with 10 chimes each time I begin detailing....

But the fan will run, warning lights, etc.
Mostly I did this for camping trips where I'm likely to be playing music for a long period of time.

Anyway, your way is certainly easier, to each their own

Is there any way of stuffing dense foam around the dinger to kind of tone it down a litte. It is way too loud even for us "older" guys.
