Bright tubular running board mistake

Stopped by a local dealer today and saw my first 2004 with factory installed bright tubular running board. No, thats not a typo. It had one bright and one black running board installed on it. I pointed it out to the salesman, and he was quick to point out that those are factory installed and not their screw-up. That didn't make me feel a whole lot better. The sticker showed that it was suppose to be equiped with bright boards.

Kind of scarry that it could make it out the door with such an obvious screw-up.

p.s. The bright board is sharp looking. It looks dressier than the chrome nerfs, but tougher than the plastic.

An apocryphal story but quite possibly true....

In the bad old days of British Leyland here in the UK one car...as I recall an Austin Princess...... actually got out of the factory with disc brakes on one side and drums on the other !

I was told that the running boards were installed after the truck hit the dealer. I think the guy probably had no idea.

I hate to be the guy who points out the negative all the time, but what's going on with these trucks? Driving through a local lot a couple of weeks ago I spotted the mismatched factory running boards, and a quick pass through another lot today and I spot something else. Take a look at the phot in my gallery and see if you see anything wrong with this pictrure.

I know it's a lousy photo. but if you look close you'll see that the front wheel moulding on this FX4 is color keyed gloss black and the rear is the standard rough textured grey. This was the only color keyed one on the truck, the passenger side was grey.

I'm making quick passes through the lots and not even looking for things to be wrong and I've found two out of approx. 30 trucks that I've looked at. Its starting to remind me of horror stories you heard about car makers in the 70's.

Can any of you that work in the auto business tell me if this is typical. Maybe its just that I've never waited this long for a new vehicle, and I'm spending too much time looking at the trucks.

Ford needs to hurry up and get me my Lariat, or hire me as a post-production inspector.
