Dealers will NEVER be honest about pricing.

He was telling the truth. If you buy it from him that IS the price...

What do you mean that "is" the price? Dealers can sell it for whatever they want, or to close a deal, give it away for free. I'm sure the cost per unit to the dealer is maybe $25 bucks or so. I'd be surprised if it was any more, after all it’s a piece of plastic that are produced by the 10's of thousands or more! Now, you might be referring to the retail price which has little or nothing to do with what it costs to produce or what they will actually sell it for, assuming people don't cave in and submit to that ridiculous $400 price for a piece of plastic.

Exactly my point. If you get one from him, it's going to be whatever he wants it to be. If he says he wants $400 for it, then the price is $400. He's not told one lie. He may be trying to rip you, yes, but he's not lying, unless he says he's selling it to you at $400 which is his cost, and he's not making anything... No one, anywhere is going to tell you their cost or their markup. $400 may be a ridiculous price, but I don't see that he's doing anything wrong or unfair, just has really high prices...

Dude, nobody said he is doing anything wrong! My only point was that $400 is a ridiculous price which is exactally what you said yourself.

Sounds like he's accusing them of lying... I was just saying that from what he wrote, they weren't lying, or masturbating, just - as you also said- have high prices.

My reference to yanking the dong and telling the truth was purely a shot at the high markups on these things. I fully understand the economics behind it but often wonder why oh why these dealers tend to run rampant with these markups. Bedliners and other various (cheap) accessories can be deal makers or breakers. Everyone would like their deal sweetened a little and with the money we're all shelling out for this FINE TRUCK I think a little show of Thanks would go along way. I'm sure FORD agrees but dealers are independently owned an operated. Luckily for me I have one hell of a salesman who went to bat for me and got me one for Free. It Sweetened the deal up just right! Now he gets excellent ratings and the dealer gets excellent ratings on the FORD survey we all get after our purchase. It's too bad a majority of the dealers out there don't see this correlation.

RLPT1, I like that explanation better than your original post. I guess I got a little defensive. My best friend is a Ford salesman, and in my opinion a very fair, and honest one. I've known him for over 20 years, and I know he does whatever he can to make sure his customers get what they want, need or can afford. I bought my truck from him, and got a heck of deal. In fact that was probably the only reason I bought a Ford (not that there is anything at all wrong with Ford, just I was wanting a GMC)...

I do understand what you're trying to say, just sometimes false generalizations are made, and that bugs me...

Bedliners cost our dealership parts department between 120-180 $, depending on the truck model. Our service department charges about $35 to put them in. So the cost to the sales dept could easily be over $200.
