Tire question

OK I was wondering if i took off the Michelin Polit LTX P255/65R17 and put the BFGoodriches Radial Long Trail T/A P265/70R17 on. Would I have to get the speedo recalerbrated. If you look at the Michelin Spects. on the Michelin web site, these tires suck.
-Micheling Polit LTX
Tread Wear=5 Weat Traction=10 Quiet Ride=8 Handling=10 Winter Traction=5 Mud Traction=N/A Overall Rating=8.7
-BFGoodrich Radial Long Trail T/A
Tread Wear=10 Weat Traction=10 Quiet Ride=10 Handling=8
Winter Traction=7 Mud Traction=6
I don't know why Ford just did not go ahead and offer the BFGoodrich's for the 17"wheels.

You can go to the Michelin web site and surf around or go to tirerack.com and find the actual diameter of the tires you are looking at. The answer to your question is, probably. There will be a slight impact to the speed-reading based on the tire change you suggested. I think I have seen posts on this site that show how to calculate it or points to a site that helps you do the calculation.

One important note… the ratings you quoted are I believe form Michelin’s and BFG’s web sites or Michelin or BFG source. The ratings on Michelin’s and BFG’s sites are based on other tires made by Michelin or BFG; they are not a head to head comparison of a Michelin VS a BFG.

I am hacked because the Ford web site says Lariat 4X4s and 4X2s come with Michelins and all the ones I have seen, including mine, have BFGs. IMO, the lowest rated Michelin is better than the best BFG – I guess since the French own Michelin and BFG, as well as Uniroyal, we should just hate them all and boycott them.

Well I guess the only reason I like the BFGoodriches is because I have them on my car and it has about 57,500 miles on it and the tires have not given me any problem and I really like them. So I guess thay is why I want the BFGoodriches. Thanks for the help.

Tire sizes are a function of width and ratio as well as wheel diameter. Quick Lesson.

Say tire size LT255/65R17 means

Width of tread area is in this case 255 mm
Ratio is ratio of width to sidewall height 65% means 255mm(.65)= 165.75 mm
R means radial
17 means 17 inch diameter wheel.

To change tire size you have to consider both tire width and ratio. If you go wider you have to decrease the ratio to maintain overall height. For example, a 255/65 is approximately the same overall diameter as a 265/60. Therefore, a 265/70 is a larger overall diameter than the 255/65 and to be right your speedometer would need to be recalabrated. However, you could go to a 245/70 although I don't know why you would want a narrower tire.
