Expect Higher Prices for 04

Ford to cut F-150 cost, delay SUV fuel goal
April 17, 2003 09:53:00 AM ET

NEW YORK, April 17 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co. (F) said on Thursday it will take two to three years to reduce the extra cost of its next-generation F-150 pickup going into production this year.

Ford also said it would not meet its 2005 deadline for improving the fuel economy of its sport utility vehicles by 25 percent -- a high-profile promise made by Ford to much public acclaim three years ago.

Phil Martens, Ford's vice president of product creation for North America, said in an interview at the New York Auto Show that Ford had set up cost-cutting projects for the F-150 that would launch every six months or so after the vehicle goes into production in June. Analysts have said the new F-150, an update to Ford's best-selling vehicle, will cost roughly $1,500 more per truck to build than the old model.

Martens also said Ford had decided to delay its SUV fuel economy improvements in order to work on a 20 percent to 30 percent improvement in fuel economy, on average, across all of Ford's models by the end of the decade. REUTERS

Well looks like the 04 will cost a little more, and for all you guys who have to have the first one, you might want to wait a little bit because I can gaurente there will not be the good rebates they have now for the current model, and you can expect dealer mark up at first or you will actually be paying MSRP for them, when means my truck would have cost 28g. LOL Glad I got it for 22 out the door.

Thanks for the article. I had read something like that awhile back. I heard 2K more to build and 4K is what Ford would have to charge to make any money. Seems like Ford has screwed the pooch on this one. Plus, they have taken way to long to get this truck out. But, they continue to win in the sales race even w/ the oldest truck on the market. But, will it last after 04?

yeah well with them still having '02,s and a glut of '03,s flooding the market as they shut down the line and sales slowing as the economy sputters,I doubt very much that they would shoot thier selfs in the foot by demanding MSRP on the '04..I'm waiting for a '04 and I could get a '03 on a sweet deal now...but I'll wait and deal and needle 'em till I get what I want...an '04 at the price I want!!!!!!!!!!

I also intend to bargain hard on my 04. If I can't get the deal I want I may take a steal on an 03 or just wait till the first buying rush is over. I really want one of the first ones in my State but I don't intend to be raked over the coals either.
