I don't quite agree that it was the OP's outlook that was at fault, I think it was simply a lack of understanding.

That, and the fact that he wanted to avoid disconnecting the battery at all costs. I just can't believe that nobody can find this issue he is having with the PATS system. This truck is 19 years old. From one of his other threads:

We've had the issue with the truck / PATS issue since the first time the battery was changed - that's when the Ford dealer service manager came to our house and said the PATS system is the problem and that it can sometimes be "Finicky". All we know is that whenever the battery is unhooked or removed/changed, getting the darn thing to start again is difficult. We have replaced the remote batteries, the remotes themselves, battery cables, truck ground, even the PATS chip keys over the years and still get the same results (crank/no start after changing disconnecting the battery). Sometimes the theft light is flashing/sometimes it isn't.

Hi everyone and again, thanks for all the help. Even though I wasn't able to find the trouble myself, I did learn an ENORMOUS amount about troubleshooting electrical problems on a car/truck. I think that one of the benefits of going to a website forum like this is getting so many responses from people with different perspectives and learning.. This website has helped me out on other problems as well so I still feel lucky to have a resource like this. After the suggestion here about my windshield leaking onto the GEM, (made by Jimbo74), I called the repair shop and spoke with the tech who worked on my truck. The tech said that it's a common with these trucks, with water leaking down on to the GEM from the windshield. The tech said he could look at the truck again if I wanted but it wouldn't be free. As to the issue with the alternator, the tech said he found it after hooking up a scope, which was hooked to somehow record on to a computer, and it recorded something a few hours after being hooked up. I don't have whatever type of scope or computer he was talking about, but I guess that pointed him to also check out the GEM. I wish the tech could have found the reason for the alarm issue, but honestly I was just happy to get the drain resolved. Once again, I hope everyone here will accept my thanks for all the help and advice offered - I DO appreciate it! Sorry to be such a lunk-head, but hopefully I won't have any more problems with my truck, at least for a while!
