Key in Ignition Chime

Hello, I just picked up a 1998 XL, in pretty decent shape. Is there a way to disable the chime that dings when the key is in the ignition, and door is open? Thanks very much.

Remove the column shroud and disconnect (or cut) the violet/black wire that attaches to the cylinder housing.

You're now responsible for removing the keys when you exit, no reminders now...

Yes. That won't be an issue. Around my property the chime was driving me crazy. I appreciate the help. Nice fix.

I don't know about you, but I started driving before cars had this. I believe this didn't start till 1969, when they moved the ignition from the dash to the steering column.

I started driving in 1979. It was mostly buzzers then. Some of them were just relay type gizmos plugged into the fuse box, I used to trace the noise and rip the thing out.☺

I learned to drive in a old '53 Ford pickup on the farm. No buzzers or chimes, just rattles, in that thing.

You young whipper snappers!

I used to take the bit and reins so nobody would steal my horse (and buggy).

Eventually she learned to whinny when I forgot to take them.

Very annoying.
Only way to stop her was to slap a feedbag on her ASAP.

And Ford had the ignition on the left side of the dash till 1964, everyone else had it on the right side.

My uncle was a wholesale bait dealer, he drove his truck on the beach in NJ on a daily basis. He had a 54 Ford, he got rid of it when there was hardly any driver's floor left and one of the bed sides fell off.

I've noticed some buses and trucks still have the key on the left side. But usually a button to engage the starter on the right.
