Moldy smell from AC

I needed to clean the evaporator on my 99 F150 but couldn't find info anywhere for our model years. Finally decided to do it myself and it worked great. See details below. This is based on a video by a guy on yutube called Sweet Project Cars.

I figured it and cleaned my evap core yesterday. It worked great, no more smell. Hope this helps someone here.

97-’03 F150 AC Evaporator Cleaning

1. Buy a can of Lysol Crisp Linen Scent or Lysol unscented, one can of Kool-It Evaporator cleaner at either O’Reilly’s or on Amazon, and one can of AC Safe Foaming Coil Cleaner at Home Depot. Do not try any other brands.

2. Turn fan on high and spray a generous amount of Lysol into grill outside windshield at passenger side and driver side. This kills the mold.

3. Open glove box door, release the tabs on both sides, and secure door all the way down. I used a bungee to the seat release bar

4. Carefully drill 2 half inch holes in black plastic just above the glove box plastic frame as shown in photo. Be very careful not to drill too far, go slow and easy or you will ruin the evap. It is only about ¾ inch inside the box. Don’t let any plastic chips fall into holes.

5. Take the nozzle off the Lysol and put the nozzle and tube from the Kool-It kit on the Lysol.

6. Turn the fan on low and spray plenty of Lysol through the tube and into each hole, sweeping left/right and up/down. Let fan run 15 minutes.

7. Next put on your safety glasses, and attach tube to the Kool-It can. With ac and fan off, place tube end into hole, hold on, and spray entire can into each hole, aiming tube up/down left/right. Let soak for 15 minutes.

8. Run AC on low for 5 minutes.

9. Turn off AC and fan. Now switch tube to the large AC Safe can and empty can into holes spraying around. Soak 15 minutes. Run AC for 5 minutes.

10. Seal up holes with your choice (caulk, silicone duct tape, just don’t use spray foam).
