1999 4.2 engine......
The 4.2l V6 is a great engine above 97/98 m/y. In fact, it is an industrial engine used in a generators and water pumps. Ford Power Products sold this engine as the ESG-642, which could be used on gas/LP/NG with the appropriate setup.
It's a standard push rod OHV design that is simple. In fact, Ford is bringing back OHV in their new 7.3l V8 in the Super Duty.
I've got a '07 V6 manual F150, and it's a great truck. It's been great to me, and I like it. It's done way more than what it's intended to do, or "rated" to do.
Heck, I'm still on the fence of trading it up in a few years. I very tempted to to just keep it, even if I don't use it much. It's a great "have on hand" type of truck.
I still want a heavier diesel truck for tougher tasks.... but it's not burning a hole in my pocket just yet.

Lucky you!! I have a ‘97 4.2 SuperCab with 5-spd manual, and I’ve NEVER gotten better than 13.5 mpg highway! Currently 260K on the truck, but original engine hydro-locked at 114K and ‘grenaded,’ so it got a new long-block in 2010. Runs GREAT, burns no oil, but gas mileage SUCKS.
