Need HELP! 2001 F150 XL 4.2 won't crank.
I have a 2001 F150 XL (4.2) that won't crank. Starter is still good (got it tested). Changed out solenoid. Able to start truck from under hood with screwdriver touching solenoid points. But, when they key is turned, it won't crank. Please help! I use this to make deliveries for my second job and I'm losing out on money.
After the Neutral Safety Switch or the Clutch Safety Switch (they are electrically the same thing, but mechanically they are completely different), the next on the list of usual suspects is the Ignition Switch itself. The key turns a lock that pulls a rod that moves a switch. The switch is a failure point.
The truck will only start in P or N, this is done via the Neutral Safety Switch, or if the clutch pedal is depressed, this is done by the Clutch Safety Switch. If you have an automatic, you can try moving the gear selector to either side of the N position to see if you can find a "sweet spot" where the truck will start. This turns the problem into an adjustment of the linkage.
